BodybyFisher Posted October 27, 2007 Report Share Posted October 27, 2007 The movie The Abyss for me, is like the movie Top Gun, I never get tired of it. While it got bad reviews, to me it was way ahead of its time. I don't like some of the edits and some of the acting seems staged and dramatic to me. The ship that is in that movie, called the Mendic Explorer, I spent two summers helping to build it at Sun Ship in Chester, Pa, and I was on its maiden voyage to monitor the cranes. We got triple time and ate steak all weekend. The ships name... the Howard Huges Glomar Explorer, it was built by the CIA under cover as a mining ship, it had HUGE doors in the bottom that opened up, and it had ballast tanks to compensate for the hole in its hull ... It has bow thrusters to keep it centered over a spot via GPS. It was built to pull up a sunken Russian sub in the Pacific. A huge claw came was dropped down from the middle of the ship stealthy like, and it picked up the sub, only to have it break in half. It was not until I saw the movie The Abyss that I recognized the ship and researched it, to find out 25 years later that I contributed to the effort. I spent the first summer with the 66 department stage builders removing 2 by 10 by 20 foot planks from the ballast tanks and the second summer with the 84 department maintenance machinists installing the cranes. Great experience, removing my transmission was NOTHING when you see them move a 600 ton wheel house, or remove or install props (screws). I got to see a few ships launched also, that is an amazing feat.. A bit of a sci-fi love story, with cutting edge special effects for 1989. So, what year did you help to build the Mendic Explorer? Some sailor bragging in a bar broke the story and the USA returned the bodies to the USSR. I was in Sun Ship during the summers of 70 through 75.. I believe we finished it in 72. KFM is funny as sh*t if you have a warped sense of humor Didn't realize that was the Glomar......interesting, did you read the next Star Trek movie will have Nimoy but not Shatner? I think it was Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio you're thinking of.... Great movie. I heard the same rumor about the russian sub, that it was staged to be "leaked", and that we got it all...
