Added FIREWALL ZONE ALARM

Recommended Posts

I added a firewall to my laptop. ZONE ALARM. Now I see red X's everywhere on this site. No other site is affected only this site. Anotherwords, the tiny icons for BOLD, ITALIC, UNDERLINE above are red X's along with most everything else.

Does anyone know what is going on? thanks, Mike

I've had it for some time now on the advice of more knowledgable computer friends and have no complaints.

Ditto, I have used it for at least 5 years and love it. Want to pull your hair out? Try Outpost.. It was recommended to me by Regis, and I had to spend 100% of my time messing with it... In its defense, Regis did say he would sit with me to set it up... It was just too confusing for me.... and this comes from a person that has built 500 high performance computers...

  • 2 weeks later...

Several years ago, I used ZoneAlarm's security programs, but various clients kept having problems with them not playing well with various and sundry other programs. For about the last three years, I've used and recommended the AVG products ( http://www.grisoft.com ) and found them quite good. Their firewall and A/V products are easy to configure, seem very reliable and thorough, and I have no complaints.

After evaluating and tossing such "name brands" as Norton, McAfee and the rest, I recommend trying AVG if you have problems with your security measures.

I don't blame you for getting rid of Norton and McAfee there,

They hog resources as if they were the only necessary tasks!

The trouble I had with Zone Alarm was that it would ignore my settings every time I rebooted the machine.. or it would randomly close certain things off... for example it didn't like Internet Explorer at all.

I personally work for the Geek Squad and have been a computer "geek" my entire life, im now referred to as an Agent, regardless a few things to consider; If you are behind a router that has a firewall, you have a fair amount of protection, also just a combination of Windows Firewall, and AVG's new security center is more than enough protection. Also in regards to Norton the new 07 version is very well made and has been made more efficient than any other version of Norton I have ever used. I would ditch the Zone Alarm it’s going to do nothing but irritate you. The new AVG incorporates their Anti-Virus and Ewido Anti-Spyware protection, I have been running it on several of my machines as a test and love it. The best part of it it’s all free, its updated often and it works well. You can purchase their professional license, but the features added are not necessary for securing your home computer.

Thanks for that info Jim, while I am happy with ZA, it is in fact a hog and my computer feels like I am using 90 octane in my NS with it... in August.. Thanks, Mike

Thanks for that Ed. I am using Norton AV 2006 and I like it quite a bit. It just goes about its business very quietly.. Thanks for your offer of help, obviously if I can help you, don't hesitate, Mike

Well the 06 version was a large memory hog, also too many processes running if your subscription is almost up or near i would recommend going and getting the new version, through testing, the 07 version only uses about 10-20mb of ram, while 06 at times can get up around 70mb, also had almost no effect on my boot time, unlike the lag you may experience with 06 running. Also full system scans run significantly faster. Just my 2 cents.

Peter Norton should sell some of his artwork and sue the trousers off Symantec for ruining his heretofore good name...as someone who remembers the "Norton Undelete" of 1983ish vintage, and the various DOS based Norton Utilities with some fondness, it's a shame that Symantec has completely trashed him.

There must be others here with roots back in the 'early days' - who else remembers QEMM, or PC Tools, Xtree, or programs like Telix and Procomm? Any body else still have their original 5.25" Turbo Pascal diskettes? LOL

When you figure that Windows itself first appeared in what, 1984? and featured the world's ugliest windowing interface plopped down on top of DOS 2.0, I guess we've come a long way, baby. I remember loading an early Windows/286 on my PCs Limited (HA!!) 12mhz PC-AT screamer - a buddy scoffed when I bought it with a full megabyte of RAM...ahhh, those were the days.

My home PC has nearly 3 times the disk space the Dun & Bradstreet mainframe I learned on had, even while it maintained 50 million business records.

I have AVG (free version) as well as ZA. I doubt the free version has a firewall. They seem to work just fine, but then I probably wouldn't know if they weren't.

Correct - the firewall is included with the paid license. I consider the $50 for two years cheap insurance against the bad guys...

Now THAT is a statement that I can agree with 100 %. I have the ZA Pro. Wouldn't be without it.
