1992 eldorado starter problem

Recommended Posts

Hello,  92 Eldorado, broken 3 starters in a little over a half year. What can be the problem? Engine runs super smooth, timing is perfect, doesn't mix oil and water. Usually starts right up. sometimes when turning key, doesn't start but then fires right up. then eventually "tack, tack, tack" bang. Any ideas? Thanks!!

What is happening to the starter?  The drive going bad?, the solenoid?

Somehow the shaft/axle gets pushed /moved over and the end cover ( cast iron?) cracks and a piece falls off.

That is a new one on me, it sounds almost like crank shaft end play.  The next time it happens have the mechanic check the flywheel for cracks, missing or loose bolts and end play, this is not common.  I had a 91 with a 4.9, loved it.

Right? @rockfangd this is an odd one.  Maybe the starter mounting bolt holes?

Could be a flywheel issue such as cracking or ring gear damage.

He really needs to check the gap between the ring gear and the bendix. He may actually have to install a shim between the starter and the block.

If too tight...it can actually break the starter housing.

The starter housings are kind of designed to be sacrificial to some extent....it's a lot better to break a starter vs break the engine block if too tight.

I don't have  a picture, could get one next Monday. The engine has some 150000 miles on it. new starters. now they put in a remanufactured one.

I would be surprised if any replacement starter would come with the bracket.......just like alternators don't come with brackets either....

A little bracket like that is a prime candidate for being tossed out....forgotten....or classified as "not needed".

No bracket....good chance you would crack a starter every couple of months..
