1406 ... valve problem or sensor problem??

Here's the codes that were set:

1406 "Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Position Sensor Performance"

0300 "Engine Misfire Detected"

<_<

They cleared and have not set again, but the car runs rough at low rpm's when cold. I hate to buy a new EGR valve gasket and spend the time to pull/clean if it's a sensor problem. Anyone know if this code indicates a valve or sensor problem.

Actually, if it's a valve problem, I think I will replace instead of clean. GMpartsdirect has this part for $116. Dealer wants $283!!! I think if it's the valve, it would be better to replace.

Anyway, the car has 70K miles

I would clean the old EGR valve - If you clean the passage in the valve base so the plunger does not stick, it should be fine.

Remember - do not let the cleaner run into the top (coils) of the EGR. Also, we learned that you can connect a torx bit to the pintle valve & spin it to clean it better.

isn't there a way to change the value of the EGR position from the dash? (off/warmer) - maybe change the value to a more extreme position to see if the car runs better at idle?

when i cleaned my EGR i reused my gasket as i had read that you could do ...

the carb. cleaner that i used did not clean it that well, but by plunging it in and out and spining it with a torq. bit and carefully scaping at the bore with a pocket knife it cleaned up nicely.

as easy as a job, as it is, i see no need to spend a $100+ dollars for something that can be done for free and in less time than it takes to go to the parts store.

there is a good article with pics. on cadillacforum.com(i think) that walks you threw it step by step...

good luck with it, Catmendo ...

Fred, here is a link to the EGR R/R that i mentioned ...

http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/cadil...-egr-valve.html

on my 96 concours it did not have two normal bolts holding the ERG down like he shows

instead on mine the bolt closest to the front of the car was what i would call a double sided bolt

in other words it had threads both on top and bottom of it ...

so what you had was, if you were looking at it, was a bolt in the back and a stud with a nut towards the front of the car ... take them both off (nut and bolt)... the nut is also holding down the clamp for the fuel lines too ...

and after you have lifted the clamp/strap, over it you will find that the stud is part of the head of a bolt ....

put a socket on it and take it out and then my EGR was free ...
