Rear Valve Cover Leak!!

Recommended Posts

Well, it's been 3,000 miles since my last oil change. So, the Check Oil Level comes up on the DIC. I assume it's the usual 1 qt. low so I take it to the shop up the street since they'll top it off for free. Well, they tell me nothing registered on the dip stick. And I have a leak coming from the rear valve cover seal!! I didn't get an estimate but said I'd be back. He said call for an estimate. How much will this cost me? Also, how much is the gasket if I wanted to do it myself? On that note, is this a pretty easy gasket change??

The check oil light comes on when you need 2 quarts. Check Oil light at 3,000 miles is EXCELLENT! The stick measures 2 quarts, so yes, its possible that you were two quarts low and it didnt register on the stick... NO BIGGIE... You are gettting 1500 miles per quart.. The rear cam cover seal is not easy, but you can do it. At least you don't have to maneuver around the water pump shaft like on the front. Mike

The cam cover gaskets are silicone - The bolts may just need to be retorqued but considering the effort to gain access to the bolts, I'd probably just replace it to be sure. You will need to remove the coil pack, ignition module, rear plug wires, solenoid, etc. to gain clearance. Next, remove the front engine splash shield and support the cradle with a hydraulic jack. Remove the four bolts secuting the Y-pipe to the catalytic converter. Remove the front dogbones and the front two cradle bolts and then lower the cradle slowly. That will provide spme additional clearance to remove the rear cam cover bolts. You will also need to remove the screws on the coolant crossover pipe clamps in order to move the pipe enough to access the back row of cam cover bolts.

Kevin, after hearing your description, my it isn't easy is an UNDERSTATEMENT...

I might also add, be careful you don't damage the HVAC housing and if you have room after doing the above, think about replacing it.

To pile on with what's been said above, using two quarts in 3000 miles certainly isn't out of tolerance, and you may not have much of a leak AT ALL from the rear cam cover. Have you verified the leak yourself? Do you get any dripping on the garage floor at night? I'd certainly get a second opinion before even considering fixing that leak.

That's the thing, I never noticed a leak. But, the guy said it wasn't reading on the dip stick at all! So, tomorrow I'm going to check under the car and see if anything's there. I kinda drove the car hard today so if anything did come out, it will definately show. Also, I'll check the dipstick. But, after what KHE said I doubt I'll be doing this myself. I can do it, I just don't have the time nor do I have to motivation to take on a repair like that. Can anyone predict a price on getting this done somewhere??

You must of missed that a few of us said FORGET about it. 2 quarts in 3000 miles is NO big deal.
