New wheels and tires for the STS

Of all the things about my car, so far the one thing that I dislike about it the most is the wheels. Right now my car has the silver painted 16" rims with the 235-60HR16 tires. I am considering moving up to 17" or 18". What works best? I do not want to make the ride much harsher than it is right now, but I would like a tad more grip and a more stylish rim.

Cardio-doc is a long time Caddyinfo member (Double H from the old old board), if I am not mistaken he now has an Escalade but previously had a beautiful BLACK Deville.

He has been the sponsor of a couple of Caddyinfo contests (one of which I won). All have been happy with their purchases from him, I trust him 100% and hope to buy wheels from him one day myself. Mike

Cardio-doc has great wheels, I purchased a set of the polished CTS wheels for the seville, and they look great, he shipped tehm the next day, got them in two days. I think the polished 17" STS rims from the 2005+ STS look great!

well, lowering the height of the sidewall will not "help" the ride in terms of compliance; it will make the ride harsher. it's hard to quantify whether it's too much for you, until you've dropped the money into the new tires and rims. jackg 90seville 100k

That chrome 17" set from CardioDoc would be my choice for a STS. Going to a 18" takes you out of the OEM wheel supply chain and into the aftermarket for your year / model.

My '98 has 16s and my '04 has 17s. I cannot "feel" any difference in ride quality that can be attributed to tire size (both sets of tires are 235s).

To get more grip, you will need a tire wider than 235mm. Your selection of tire brands will become very limited and going to 18s will limit you even more.

By the way, the CTS-V wheels that I showed above were 18's I was not suggesting going to 18's, I just like the style..

I've made three purchases from Doc.

Two purchases were very simple and went smoothly.

The 1st purchase started off with some communication snafu' .... basically, 2 people

buying the same rims at the same time, and my order was seconds too late. Doc

stepped up to the plate, found me a superior alternate choice of rims for less money,

and it all took just 24 hours.

I wouldn't deal with anyone but Doc when buying Ebay Cadillac wheels.

Go to www.tirerack.com. They have an interactive wheel selector, where the picture of your car will pull up. You even get to choose it's color. From there, pick the wheel(s) you like, in whatever size you like. That is how I got the wheels I have. It makes a huge difference to see what they will look like, before you pay.

Gosh - guys - thank-you so much for the kind words. I'm VERY VERY grateful. I do have to concede, that while I do work too much (I'm pretty-much always 'working') I do like what I do and am an enthusiast just like you guys - so that makes it worthwhile. But to hear kind words - well thanks.

However I can help - tech questions or to point people in the right direction - just ask. docardio@lycos.com is my e-mail address.

For wheels - call me biased but there's just nothing like OEM/GM Cadillac wheels for the best quality and long-life. I do get aftermarket wheels from time-to-time - both new and used - and you just can't compare the quality.

For a car - you're safe going to 17" and still keeping ride, but once you go to 18" ride does get notably harsher for a variety of reasons. Plus, your market for tires gets notably tighter and more expensive.

For tires - people ask me all the time. I get some 'take-off' (almost new) tires occasionally and put them right up on eBay - but they're not a regular thing. I can get Vogue tires at great pricing if you like the style. But if you just want blackwall tires in 16" or 17" sizing, you can't beat the pricing at BJ's or Sam's Club and I just tell people to get those there.

I was at one of my dealer-suppliers this week, and there was a whole 'body' off an SRX in perfect condition, just sitting in the back/service parking lot. The boy was perfect - and it was everything aft of the firewall and COMPLETE! And just sitting on the ground. Wish I had my camera that day - would have made a great and hilarious contest. We'll do that again soon.

Sorry I don't check in more often - but really, I'm just swamped with work and don't know how to delegate or hire help so I just do everything. One day I'll be more ambitious and make a plan, but for now I'm swamped.

Again, thanks for the kind words.

best,

~Doc

Doc,

Saw your auction on ebay. I have chosen 17" as I think that is the best tradeoff between ride, style, and performance. You may be getting some business from me soon.
