What to do next??

Recommended Posts

Well for about the last month I have had to boost my car every morning because over night the battery dies on me, I have so far replaced the battery got the altenator tested had the car in two garages and now I guess I will have to take it to the stealership as some of you like to call it :P . I am very frustrated as we have takein out and checked the stereo, fuses, checked every thing we could think of looking for the problem... this has got me wondering would things like this happen to me in a 2000 pontiac grand prix gtp

Does any one on here have any ideas?, this ever happened to anyone before?, thanks.

I assume that the battery is 100%

Have you checked to see if the trunk light goes out?

If you have an aftermarket Amp as part of your stereo is it turning off (trigger wire)?

Glove compartment light going off?

I recalled you installed a stereo http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=8328&hl=

I can't help but think its related to the amp

I did check the glovebox and the trunk light I actually put one of my freinds in the trunk to see if it would go out :P . I do have an aftermarket amp but it was doing all this before I put it in and the aftermarket cd player I put in has been there for a year and a half now, so im not sure if it would be the stereo or not.

Ok, let me think about this. After a few minutes the system goes into a sleep mode, I am not sure of the official name of it, but the computer etc, sleeps its possible you are not going to sleep and the parasitic drain is great, I will look at my manual. Look at you manual from something similar.

Also, there is a retained power delay, that is suppose to turn off after 10 minutes is yours turning off? (radio circuit, etc)

Is this whats supposed to shut off when you open the door to get out of the car because my stereo will stay on for ten minutes or until I open the door to get out I will check my manuel though on anything else.

That sounds right, that means that your retained power circuit is working. I'll do some bathroom reading on this and see what I can find.... LOL

I can hear you now, I will let you out.... I am just checking to see if the light goes out....

You installed the stereo about a month ago and you said this

"Well for about the last month I have had to boost my car every morning because over night the battery dies".

Feel the AMP to make sure its turning off and its not warm... The head unit has a trigger wire that controls the amp ON and OFF... Check that for me.. Also as Jim said, check your battery, I am sure its getting really cold up by you..

I am highly suspect of the addition of the aftermarket stereo equipment too. If the new battery has been completely discharged more than twice, it may be ruined. Charge the battery and then disconnect the amp, stereo, etc and see if the car starts normally after sitting overnight. If it does, you found the problem.

You can also connect a multimeter that is able to read current in series with the battery cable - disconnect the positive battery cable, connect one lead of the meter to the positive battery cable and the other lead to the battery terminal. The service manual provides the maximum current draw - anything more than what is called out in the service manual and you have a parasitic drain. Start pulling fuses until the current falls below the threshold current in the manual - the parasitic drain will be on the circuit that you just removed the fuse.

This is a bit of a challenge to figure out as so many "things" on the caddy draw power while it is off... but the keep alive stuff should draw milliamps 0.4 or so at worst...

This is a two person job...

Disconnect the negative battery cable. And install in series a digital amp meter... with the car off and no lights on you should be drawing about 0.5 or less amps... bet your drawing around 5...(based on over night battery death) DO NOT TURN ON YOUR HEAD LIGHT DURING THIS PROCEDURE as you will fry your meter...

One at a time pull and reinstall each fuse on the car... once you find the circuit that is causing the draw... check to see if it contains a relay... bet it does... pull the relay an replace it problem solved...

These cars are loaded with 12 volt relays.. often when the die they fuse "closed" and will cause the battery drain... My dads Toronado did exactly what you describe... his problem was the relay that drives the A/C compressor... $12 bucks later... problem solved!

Good Luck!

Well it wasnt really a month it has been a month since the problem has gotten bad, I was in a fender bender back in august and the car sat for two months while the insurance clame went through  so that I could get the car fixed. After that it was dead when I first went to take it out after it sat but after that it never died again until about november or so it would start to die if it was sitting for 3 or 4 days so I went out and got a new battery, every thing worked fine it never died. Than after about 3 or 4 weeks it started to do this again now dieing probly about every 2 nights of sitting, after a while about 3 weeks ago it started getting worse it would die every night so I dont think it would have anything to do with the stereo because the amp is not even hooked up its only the cd deck that is which ive had for over a year now. The battery was tested last week by a mechaic and it came up good they also unhooked the altanator and left it over night and it still died so I know its nothing in the altinator thats drawing from it, it is at the same mechanic as we speak and he is doing tests with the fuses and such tommorow, but im picking it up tommorow at 4 wether he finds the problem or not.

Wow I never even thought of trying this I wish I had of told you guys about this problem long ago before I spent all this money on a mechanic trying to find out the problem I will be sure to do this tommorow night if they dont find whats wrong, they should though if that is the problem because he said he would be testing all the fuse's tommorow morning anyways i will see what they say tommorow and if they do find the problem I will be sure to tell you all tommorow.

Have you checked the visor mirrors to see if the light is going out when they are closed? My father-in-law had this problem on his van and at night you could see a faint light coming from the visor when it was closed.

He may have finally found the problem there was alot of current going to the trunk pull down which does not work on my car, so he has disconected it and left the car for the weekend to see if it dies again or not, im just keeping my figers crossed that was it. This was the only thing that he could find that was drawing more power than it should so if its not this it's going to take a long time to find just whats causeing this to happen.
