1998 STS major shaking only on acceleration

Ok my 1998 STS has developed a pretty bad shake starting around 40 - 60. I mean a shake not a vibration. I found that my pass side control bushing was bad, replaced that and the ball joint. I still have the shake but not as bad. IT is only on acceleration, during decceleration it stops. Any ideas??

I've also noticed I have a noise over bumps from the passenger side, but hell I've had that for 60k.

Motor mounts?

Nope. Front mount is new and both side mounts are in great condition, Tranny mount looks good too.

Hey thanks for the replies. Usually an unblanced tire(s) situation will vibrate or shake when deccelerating or accelerating. I don't have that. I have the 65-72 vibration like most people but this shaking at 40-60 is completely different. I mean the car shakes!! Like I said I have replace the control arm with another one that was low mileage. The old control arm bushing was shot, I mean you could wiggle it enough to touch the metal..LOL So I figured hell that must have been it. The shaking just started a month ago one day. It doesn;t seeem to be as bad on real cold days?? I was wondering if anyone would think possible that the strut mount is bad??

BTW I had the sway bar link off yesterday and it looked good and I tightened it up well, but I can't remember if you are supposed to tightened it up when you have a load on the suspension or not. Like I mentioned before I've always had that rattling noise when going over bumps ( passenger side only )

Check for a broken steel belt in the tire, inspect the tires carefully for 'bumps' and bulges. Also have the tires road force balanced your tire may be egg shaped. See a description of the GSP9700 road force measurement here:

Noise over bumps is either the stabilizer links (but you checked yours) or the stabilizer bar bushings (see #1).

Body- Thanks for the advice with the tires but I've already jacked the car up to see if the tire has issues while running at 40-50. I haven't seen any. Also I have a really good tire balance guy down at the Discount tire and he always checks for out of round tires, etc. I'm going to have the tires rebalanced just in case.

Yes I need to check the bushings. They look good but I've read that means nothing until you get them out of the car and check the bottom or the inside of them.

Runar - I'm not getting any noise from the CV but I'm thinking now that could be the problem with the shaking anyway. Duckwalking is exactly how I would describe it, fairly vilolent around 55. it has to be something that is reacting to torque because when I deccelerate I get no shaking.

Sounds like you have all the answers, let us know when you find a solution.

Ask your Discount Tire guy to give you the readout from the runs he made on his Hunter GSP9700 diagnosing your tires. A basic balance machine is useless when it comes to road force. I am sure you saw the link to the article I gave you above.

Regarding the stabilizer bar bushings, LOOKING at them is the mistake everyone makes..... you can not see the wear until you take them off. If you are getting bump induced noise, its typically the stabilizer bar bushing, for $20 in parts and about an hour its an easy fix and a noise I wouldn't have put up with for 60,000 miles.

You should check the stabilizer link when it is unloaded. Just jack the car up and push th elink up and down. Even a 1/16'' play will make a lot of clunking.

naah I don't have all the answers or I wouldn't be here ;) I appreciate all of the feedback, trust me.

yeah I'm pretty sure that the bushing is bad. Does anyone know the part number # for the bushing??

For the price there is no reason not buy 2 and replace them. I'll post any solutions I find in regards to the shaking or the noise. darn this crap is frustrating

I'm almost hate to get rid of this car but she has 159,000. I've replaced all kinds of things, radiator, alternator, water pump, starter solenoid, motor mount, power steering hose, etc, etc in the last three years. I've done all the work myself. Problem is I work on this STS so much I don;t want to work on my PLAY car :(

Anyways, when STS is running well its awesome but a PIA to work on. Did I say I'll never own a FWD again..LOL

That's a shame, I think its easy to work on, very easy that is. The front end however that WAS very hard to work on was the 74 vintage eldorados, with the torsion bar.... I had to replace a hub bearing on that front end and will never forget it...

Check the tires out carefully, I think you will find your problem

First of all the Deville is way easier than the 98-2004 Seville. The power steering hose was an unbelievable pain in the *smurf*. My friend has a 96 Deville and I'm like holy crap you have it easy..LOL

I am getting a 98 or 99 STS soon, oh well... I heard the power steering hose is rough. See I told you the front end was easy! I think your lower control arm is a three point design, must be more difficult.. Look at your AXLE also for a bad CV joint if the tire is ok..

After I had my engine timeserted at the dealer I noticed a very hard vibration (more of a shutter) just on acceleration. The tech said the problem was the engine was not aligned properly in the cradle. I noticed you said the motor mounts were replaced so thought this might be a possibility.

Good luck.
