trans drain plug

I dropped the trans pan on my 96 STS to change what fluid I could and to check the screens. it looks spotless. i tried to reach the side drain bolt but it is impossible to reach. its on the radiator side of the trans and below the trans fill spout. what is the "pump" that is directly in front of the bolt? ABS solenoid module? man, thats a tight engine compartment.

Here is the drain plug location, it is the best pic I have. I only think this plus is accessible when the bottom pan is off.

Once you remove the pan, you shouldn't have any problen accessing the plug.

I change fluid/filters in all 3 of my cars. I am used to the mess and just take my time. I see that the pic is of the trans from the rear. of course the plug i mentioned is on the front of the trans. just below the fill hole. what do you think that plug is for? its a 1/8" pipe plug. sure does look like a fitting for draining the side cover. yes there could be another drain fitting inside the trans. i was suprised at how quick the fluid starts dripping when you loosen 3-4 bolts. in a few weeks i am going to just loosen enough bolts to drain the pan without removing it and add 3 quarts or so of fresh fluid. sorta a gradual fluid change. since the pan is so flat, it does not really trap much fluid when you loosen the bolts.

Just a little tip to reduce the mess under the car if and when it becomes necessary to drop the pan and you are working with ramps and / or jack stands.

Break into the return line plumbing at the trans. cooler connection (at the top LH corner of the radiator on my cars). Use a temporary plumbing setup and idle the engine to pump ALL the trans. fluid into your favorite container. If all you are doing is draining and refilling, you are halfway home.

If you do have to drop the pan, the dripping and clean-up will be minimal.

I'm not sure what the 1/8 pipe plug on the outside of the trans is???...But I would not attempt to remove it. The plug that drains the side cover is accessed when the pan is dropped - that is the photo that BodybyFisher posted. Once you remove that plug, the side pan will be drained.

hey JimD. if you idle the motor and than collect all the trans fluid won't the trans be just about empty? thats ok for the trans to run dry? i have visions of pumping out all the motor oil while the engine is running and than putting in fresh oil next. maybe the trans is different and can be run very low on fluid as long as you don't drive it. or as the trans fluid is pumped out, slowly add fresh fluid to the fill hole?

I want to make sure which is the side pan plug, looking at your photo that I edited the RED circle doesn't appear to be the drain, as I see a similar bolt to the left. Is the drain the BLUE circle? Thanks

pictures are cool. I recall seeing the side bolts. I thought they might be the ones i was looking for. i still want to find out what the pipe plug is on the front of the trans.

Mike, sorry for the confusion. I would do the circle thing, but I am not that savvy yet. It is the plug inside the case, that looks like a nut on a stud. Just above, and to the left, of where you circled.

Don

Let me see if this works.
