My father-in-law has a 60 convertible, a 58 and 59 4-door, 74 & 75 Caddies he also has a 59 skyliner with a continental package just sitting on his farm. He told me they all ran when he parked them. The 70 model Caddies were parked during the gas embargo in the early 70's. I thought about restoring some of them but the rust mites got to them first. Back then when they served their use he just parked them in his field. Oh what I would do to be able to just get in them and start them right up.

The 58, 59 and 60 climaxed an era we will never see again. About 75 is when I lost interest in their styling. I know if I drove one of these behemouths that I would probably not like the ride anymore, it was a baby coach feeling back then. But it would be cool on a summer night that's for sure...

Interesting to note here, Harley Earl retired from GM in 1959. After 1960, or so, GM cars began to loose the Harley Earl look. For some interesting reading, do a search for "Harley Earl". There are a number of sites on the internet devoted to his life and work.

As the mantra goes: "Our father who art in styling, Harley be thy name."

Will do... I had once heard that GM was styling their cars after WW2 bombers as that was their market in the 50's

Harley Earl began his career in the early 1920's in Hollywood designing custom bodied cars for silent era movie stars. He was hired by Cadillac in the late 20's to establish an "Art and Color" department.

Up until that time, Cadillac had been a rather matter-of-fact looking automobile. A very few years after Earl joined Cadillac, their cars flowered into the classic masterpieces of the early 30's. Harley Earl was soon promoted to Chief of Styling at GM. During World War II he became quite enamored with aircraft design. The 1949 Cadillac, with its tail fins and its vertical "air intakes" on the leading edges of the rear fenders was strongly influenced by the design of the P38. Bomb-shaped bumper elements, gun-sight hood ornaments, round jet-exhaust tail lights, and huge tail fins were all part of the look.

I think it is fitting that the quintesential example of the style, the 1959 Cadillac, was produced the year he retired. No other single person has had such a profound influence on automobile design. It is probably no small coincidence that the Harley Earl years coresponded with the period when GM's market share steadily increased to just over half the world market soon after he retired.

I loved that they changed and matured the design every two years.... 59/60, 61/62, 63/64, 65/66. 67/68, 69/70, 71/72/73, 74/75, etc... It created excitement..

There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises

OK, I'll bite. Why Warren?

Well if one has to explain the joke, it was probably pretty bad one to begin with.

With BodybyFisher having expressd his love for big fins of the '59 - '60 era, I thought he might enjoy the "Cadillac" tailights and fins on a non-land vehicle. That's all.

Regards,

Warren
