Bruce Nunnally
Well, here it is in all of its confusing glory...the 2020 CT5 which is replacing the previous CTS. Unfortunately the CT5 doesn’t seem to be a step forward for Cadillac, in fact, they made some pretty big mistakes with this model which are an apparent trap for consumers...In today’s Deep Dive we will cover everything you need to know about the new CT5 and it’s various trim and engine offerings. Bruce Nunnally
I agree - at least a real car guy in design. My position is that each car should be the best Cadillac the company can make. The only reason I can fathom to de-tune the new LSY 2L Turbo from 272 or 290 hp down to 237 hp is to separate it clearly from the up-market engine power level. They should instead be tuning the up-market engine where it should be -- so instead of tuning the LSY at 236 hp, tune it for 285 hp and the 3L turbo for 400 hp / 410 ft-lbs of torque. That said, I think the 3L Turbo is the more interesting engine. Although it is also tuned oddly, making 335 hp similar to a non-turbo 3.6L V6, but 400 ft-lbs of torque (542 nm). So this suggests to me it is really a 400/400 engine if it were tuned properly. I get that Cadillac is tuning for off-idle torque. However, with the 10 speed auto transmission and VVT, that type of tuning doesn't make much sense. We should get low torque and high rpm HP both in these engines. I believe they are being detuned for marketing reasons. Back to my original point, choosing not to make the best car you can is self-defeating and unwise. BodybyFisher
Could they be de-tuning for the sole purpose of improved gas mileage? Bruce Nunnally
I wondered something similar -- had they detuned to allow regular instead of premium? but no, still requires premium. The new LSY adds start/stop, and active fuel management vs the prior LTG 2L T, both of which do help fuel economy, but I should not impact power output. LSY 237 hp @ 5000 rpm, 258 ft-lb @ 1500-4000 rpm. LTG from ATS: 272 hp @ 5500 rpm, earlier 260 ft-lb at 1700-5500 rpm, later 295 ft-lb @ 3000-4600 rpm It also is possible the hp peak for the LSY is actually higher than 5000 and Cadillac is intentionally underrating it? I have not seen a factory dyno chart for it. OH - this may be it: back to Active Fuel Management -- when the engine is on the highway loafing along at 1500 rpm and operating on 2 cylinders, it may be critical that it maximize torque at that point. So tuning to maximize off-idle torque could be supportive of AFM. Possible they have put as small a turbo as they could tolerate in order to reach power at the lowest RPM, which is why it is running out of breath by 5000 rpm. cdgrinci
The biggest transgression Cadillac has made is the deceiving nomenclature to their engine/model descriptors (if you were at all aware of the predecessor). And if you thinking the naming is confusing, try to go to the "Build and Price" feature on the Cadillac website and try to figure out which package(s) you need/want, because configuring is a nightmare in my opinion. So many options are embedded in nebulous packages and some combinations just don't exist (without ordering the full monte) that I found it cumbersome. On a whole though I do like the vehicle, but as the video said; pretty darn confusing.
