Gear Selector Interlock Problem

BodybyFisher

Recommended Posts

My console gear shift selector is stuck in park, and the button can not be pushed.

I can not get it out of park.

My 96 you needed to press the brake to release the selector and there was a click when you tapped the brake pedal.

This was like this before I swapped a new engine in, which I completed last night. When I had it towed from my house to the lot I worked on it in back in July it was stuck then.

Any ideas? This is a 97 Eldorado

Going to check the owners manual to see if there is a manual override and hit the service manual now, thanks

You should be able to remove the bezel from around the shifter assembly and pop the solenoid off its mounting pins - that will defeat the interlock and you can then shift out of park.

The "staple" that retains the shift knob is removable from the front side of the knob stem - it just pulls out. It has a crown on the legs - install the staple with the crown up.

Check to see if the solenoid is receiving power when you step on the brake pedal - if it is, then the shifter solenoid is bad. If there is not any power at the solenoid, there could be an issue with one of the switches on the brake pedal arm.

just be careful if it has the zebrano trim bezel as they can break when they get older. I treat them with extreme delicate handling.

Thanks guys, that is exactly what I needed.

I got in there and disconnected the brake cable, then found that if I moved the solenoid to the left the button would depress. Got her in gear and all is good.

Ill do some diagnostics over the next few days to see what is going on.

I have another odd problem, when I kick the high beams all headlights go out! Odd.. I have some work to do.

check the fuse that controls the shift interlock. Underhood I believe.

Check your brake lights also. Maybe the brake switch(s) is not working right.

As for the headlight issue it sounds like the dimmer (high beam switch). My truck has been doing that for awhile. I just havent gotten to putting the switch in.
