98 Deville stopped running..Fuel?

Recommended Posts

The wifes 98 stopped in the middle of the road last night. It tried to restart when I arrived. I can start it with starting fluid. Relay seems good and I have yet to check fuel pressure, but I will shortly. The Guage has been wacky latley and the gas cap code has been erased a dozen times. Codes today P1599 B1910 BO533 and of coures 440

Just bouncing it off the board before I go ripping out the pump......

Thanks in Advance!

Kirk

B1910 - Generator L-Terminal Open Circuit

B0533 - Fuel Sensor Open/Shorted To B+

You say OF COURSE 440, what is that code a P?

P0440 - Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System

The P0533 is probably the reason you have had FUEL GAGE problems

The B1910 code, SHOULD be causing problems charging the battery

I believe you can change your fuel pump through the trunk or behind the rear seat. When you turn on the key, do you hear the fuel pump run for about 10 seconds put your head near the fuel filler and listen and have someone turn the key on.

Has the fuel filter been changed? Although, I dont believe that will cause this, we recently discussed that the fuel filter is rarely the problem.

I would check the FUEL PUMP RELAY for green/white corrosion on the contacts and swap in a KNOWN GOOD relay before assuming this is the FUEL PUMP. Then I would check the connector at the TOP of the fuel pump given the code you are showing above regarding the fuel level sensor maybe your wires have been damaged by road debris

Unfortunately I dont think the 99 has the access. I have tried on the Deville and the eldorado but not the Seville. not sure what year that started but I wish it started a long time ago lol.

Did you try putting some gas in the tank?

I changed the battery a month or so back.....could be that was in history

Check Gas Cap throws the PO440 code and has since we got it 2 years ago. I clear ot and it returns in a month or so but has never cause an issue.

I read some where they swapped the to relays in the hood area fuse panel and that is what I did and it didn't help. I noticed very little if any contact issues at the relay.

I can't hear a pump running at the fuel cap by listening and don't have a stethascope .....I'll use a screw drive to my era like daddy did and get back to ya !

Thanks guys for the replys thus far.....I appreciate it!

A old trick you can try.....smack the center of the fuel tank several times with a rubber mallet.

This trick worked recently on a no start Chevy truck with 300k a family friend has on my suggestion. That pump owed him no favors...he still had to replace the pump about 2 weeks latter....but it got the truck running that day.

As strange as it sounds, the hammer medhod turned out to be a clever trouble shooting tool. Once tapped, the engine acted as if it wanted to start. However when we quit tapping the pump quit working.

BTW, I found an Airtex at Amazon for $195.00 and with UPS Red I still beat all the parts houses by a bunch !

Thanks again to all. I very much appreciate the time you spent today answering my question

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year :yupi3ti:

Next time consider using rockauto.com they had the airtex for $199 and we have a 5% discount.

Let us know what happens when you install the pump

The hammer trick has saved me all but 1 tow bill. When the one on my oldsmobile went in rush hour traffic. it just wouldnt restart. I had to pull it home. but worked every other time.

Glad to see you are on the right track

Be sure to inspect the fuel pump wire terminals very closely. As the fuel pumps wear out...it can overheat the related wire terminals. This can result in a repeat no-start.

Here is a link showing a over-heated connector. The connectors typically do not look this bad...It does require extremely close inspection of the metal terminals. Check at the pump...and the outside fuel tank connector. Many replacement pumps now come with a new in-tank harnesses.

Actually pretty good information web site. Good down-to-earth advice.

Just finished the Airtex Fuel Pump replacement. The kit had a Wire/Plug Update. Spliced in new Plug provided and problem seems sloved....starting noramly once again!

Not bad time for dropping the tank, glad you got it started and that it was the fuel pump, thanks for getting back and reporting your experience and results

excellent. Always glad to hear success, and most pumps do come with the new harness repair kit. The hardest part I run into on these cars is the plastic clips that are for the evap system, on the driver side at the back of the tank. I always worry about breaking them
