engine overheating

My car started heating up while I was driving on the highway..I had checked the temp and it started going to 250 and up so I got off the next exit and at the light the car shuts off if from it overheating. Turned it on again and the DIC all of sudden said to change engine oil and the engine oil life went down to 0%. Why would it say that. So I ended up calling a tow truck to tow it home. Just replaced the radiator about a month or two before new thermostat, even with the fans working the temp. kept rising to 260. Any idea what it could be?

car has 122k

Your coolant life went to 0 because the oil was cooked. Before going through the many possibilities, have the coolant tested for exhaust gases or get the kit from Napa and do it yourself. If it is positive, your head gaskets are shot. If not, then we can start eliminating things.

Did you have any steam under the hood?, when this happened?, does it appear that you had a leak?, that caused this

No, no steam from under the hood. It had been losing coolant for awile before this happened but it wasn't everyday it happened twice. It was coming from the coolant tank (out the overflow hose)

Either test the coolant for combustion gasses or remove the spark plugs and the overflow cap on the surge tank. Install an air adapter into the spark plug hole, bring the respective cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke with a breaker bar on the balancer pulley bolt. Connect the shop air hose to the adapter and pressurize the cylinder with air. There should be no bubbles in the coolant that it in the surge tank. If there are, the head gasket(s) is shot. Repeat for the other 7 cylinders. Attached is a picture of the air adapter I made a few years ago.

Have you checked the purge line to make sure it is not blocked?

"Sounds like pulled headbolts. Follow Ranger's suggestion. See my earlier posts on pulled headbolts. "

If you don't follow this advice you are only wasting time...

I realize that you are the head gasket failure expert, but its not necessary to SHOVE it down my throat after my post (when you stated it IMMEDIATELY before my post) when I ask if there was any STEAM under the hood. We ALL are aware of the head gasket problem through 99, you are NOT the only member that knows this please try to MODERATE your TOTALLY negative and repetitive statements it gets tiring.

No one is in denial here, we just want to eliminate all possibilities. No one here is STUPID, so PLEASE back off

I wasn't shoving anything down anyone's throat. I don't consider myself an expert and I wasn't trying to upstage you.

You owe me an apology.

Jeeziz don't be so touchy, get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning?

Then explain why it was necessary to REPEAT your post immediately after mine, it looks suspect sorry but your repeat served no purpose

You had the tantrum not me.

You've revealed more about yourself than you know.

I am finished with this thread. I wish 98DeVille the best of luck with his problem and he is very welcome to contact me off list for any help he thinks I can provide.

Just look at post #3 and #6. Your post #6 came after I said was there steam and it had NO purpose other to aggravate the situation. I reveal about myself?, go back and do a search of ALL of your posts and a high percentage are negative head gasket problems, WE have had this discussion before, you are very negative and I dislike negative posters, that is what I am revealing here, I hate negative gloom and doomers...
