I'm Back!

Hello everyone! As you may recall, I had a 1999 STS that the engine died in due to the PO using too much RTV to attempt to fix the case half oil leak. Then, I bought a remanufactured motor from Custom Innovations in Wisconsin, and the first motor had the wrong size piston installed in one of the bores and smoked like a freight train. Shipped the car back to Wisconsin and had a second motor installed that within 3 months pulled the head bolts and started overheating. I got fed up and sold the car for next to nothing. I then purchased a pretty nice 1991 white diamond STS that I was driving up until today. It had 240K on the body and about 110K on a junkyard motor. I wasn't really looking but stumbled across a 2000 Z-rated STS with the adaptive seat package. The car is in very good shape and after doing a service record check at the local dealer, I was pleasently surprised to learn that the engine had been replaced at 48K miles due to a porous block. The car has 109K on it. The only issue with it is the P0471 and P1860 tranny codes. I couldn't pass the car up though...bought it from the dealer that took it in on trade for $3000! It's dark now but I will try to get some pics for you guys tomorrow. The car is bronzemist with the cashmere interior. The car doesn't have a CD player in it at all...no changer in the console, and the head unit has a freaking MiniDisc player. ***edit*** here is a quick pic from the dealers website...

Gees Charles, you're the second person I've heard of with a bad experience with Custom Innovations.

For anyone else in need, there is a guy in London Ontario that does them with studs for $1500 ($500 for the kit if you want to do it yourself. ). 50 done to date with no comebacks. He is also in the process of fabricating solid front motor mounts, since the 2000+ (without torque struts) seem to only last about a year. I'm waiting for one of the 1st three (I'll be a tester).

BTW, welcome back.

Larry,

I read the last page of the thread on the other Cadillac board where the guy describes the studs. He doesn't use any inserts? What keeps the studs from pulling out of the block?

That makes sense now but how is that setup any stronger/durable than the Timesert/headbolt combination? My STS has 38,000 miles on the repair that is 2-1/2 years old and it is just fine.

Thanks for the welcome back guys! The '91 STS was a great car, but was showing its age mechanically and cosmetically. I think I will have a shop replace the PWM solenoid IF I ever decide to replace it. From what I can gather, the only problem is a decrease is fuel mileage. Is that correct? The slaesman said I can bring the car back to them and they will replace it for $1300 and that still seems like a good deal for this car at $4300.

You'd have to go back and read that threaad from the beginning Kevin. I think he talks about that. That said, I recall a lengthy and somewhat heated debate about studs between some tech and the Guru once.
