Dave in Texas
I'm a carb guy and have a question about the TB on my '87 DeVille. What, if anything, can go wrong/bad on a TB? I've got a new engine in the car and have most everything hooked-up. I had no TB problems with the old engine, so my intention is to use it. Since there are no jets/metering rods/floats to deal with, I'm wondering.....thanks. GM Reman 4.1 engine Dec '
BodybyFisher
Not much besides it getting dirty and its passages getting dirty. Obviously if there are any seals or gaskets, it would be good to replace them along with any seals for controls, etc. Check the area for bad vacuum hoses. The only other thing that could happen is that the throttle plate shaft could wear, but that is rare. Give it a good cleaning, replace any gaskets and seals. rek
Carb like issues...worn shaft/bore-vacuum leak? Dirt- impeding air flow. rek
KHE
Replace the gasket where the throttle body mounts to the intake manifold as well as the o-ring seals where the fuel supply and return lines connect as well as any vacuum hoses that may be rotted and it should be good to go. TBI engines don't get the gooey carbon/crud buildup like port fuel injected engines since there is gasoline washing down the passages. Dave in Texas
O-rings and new vacuum lines were part of the plan, but I thought I could reuse the TB gasket. Thickest gasket I've ever seen. I've got a few more hours of hooking stuff up, but then I can pressure-oil this 0-miles engine and see how it runs. 1st 0-miles engine I've dealt with in over 40yrs.....I recall why I quit being a mechanic and went into the 'easy' trade of electrical construction. KHE
Don't reuse the TB gasket - buy a new one. The last thing you want is a leak on top of a hot intake manifold...
