Waterpump replacement 4.6L

Recommended Posts

So I heard there is a tool needed to do this job? What is involved as far as tools and is there anything I need to know about the removal and install? Thanks guys!

Buy the waterpump tool at any car parts chain (Advance, Autozone, NAPA) use a 1/2 inch breakerbar, remove the W-P cover, install the tool and give it a shove clockwise (be carefull you don't smash the windshield) remove the old W-P and installation is the reverse of removal. The Northstar W-P is the easiest W-P I've ever changed. You should also change the W-P belt and tensioner at the same time.

Good luck

Its tricky, but you can do it, buy a good WP tool, I bought a LISLE and while I though it was a good one, it sucked. Bruce has one you can rent, check it out.

Make sure that you have totally engaged it when you reinstall it, I thought re-installing it was difficult and a little tricky but I was fighting a lousy WP tool. Make sure you replace the body seal that is located in the cavity. Mike

Don't forget, use vasoline to hold the o-ring on the back of the pump on and you should change the housing gasket too.

I held the housing gasket in place with NYLOG, a gummy o-ring sealant used for AC o-rings

I know it has been stated before but remember to turn the pump cartridge CLOCKWISE to remove and COUNTERCLOCKWISE to install the new pump. It is very easy to get stuck in the righty-tighty-lefty-loosey routine (which is incorrect in the water pump application) and bend the tabs on the pump flange. If that happens, you will need to remove the water pump crossover passage if you can't straighten the tabs and that job is an absolute MF'er with the engine in the car...

It helps to use an impact wrench on the water pump socket - it will pop the water pump cartridge right out.

very easy to do. (i've done it twice, lol) Dealer wants 3 hours to do it. I can get it done in 45 minutes including drain and refill. It's THAT easy! Be careful when torquing the water pump cover bolts back on. DO it as if you are putting on a spare tire alternating tightening the bolts. I had one snap off and it had to be drilled out and then get a tap and die set to redo the hole. Yucky.
