I wrote earlier about the service engine soon and rough idle. I also pulled the codes which referred to fuel lean bank 1 & 2. I was told to check for vacuum leaks. Update I replaced the pcv grommet on the valve cover. While doing so i noticed a 1 inch crack all the way through on the rubber hose from the pcv to the hard tubing. I repaired with a piece of 3/8 fuel line. The check engine light went off but it has been going on and off, so i don't know if it is off for good. The engine now idles rougher than before, so i disconnected the negative battery terminal to clear the computer. I hoped it would relearn fuel mixture etc. Have not drove the car much except around the block. I thought and hoped i solved the problem i even heard the pcv click when i sealed the crack in the hose with my finger. Any suggestions are welcome (rough idle still)

Thanks Raz

See this link, Logan had a lean condition and found a cracked rubber coupler. It is located behind the throttle body between the throttle body and intake..

By the way, if you already had another thread on this, you should have this moved to that thread, no need to start new threads, its good for a single thread to follow a problem from start to finish

I checked that gasket between the throttle body and the intake manifold. It looked ok but i need to get a mirror to see underneath for any cracks. The wife will be taking the car to work tommorrow, i will update on the service engine soon light and the idle problem.

Use a stethescope if you have one. A vacuum leak will sound like Katrina. You can hear what you may not be able to see.

Before i fixed the pcv hose leak i would get these codes.

PCM P0171 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1

PCM P0174 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 2

I will check codes tomorrow after the wife drives it.

This is a vacuum leak or something is going on with fuel. Have you checked fuel pressure? That would be something I would do and keep looking for a vacuum leak. Did this start suddenly? How are the brakes, normal? (vacuum brake booster can leak). As ranger said, do some critical listening for a vacuum leak

Carb or brake cleaner sprayed around the boot will show it faster. All it need is a crack. You really cannot see the crack.

Spray it....hear a change in RPM. It's the boot...

Same codes came up again today still rough idle. I checked with a mirror around intake gasket looks ok. Will continue to check for vacuum leaks. The problem started when the service engine soon was first seen. The last work done on car was a front end alignment and hub bearing being changed by the dealer.

Does everything in your car work ok, ie, HVAC, brakes, parking brake release? If yes, buy a fuel pressure guage (about $40) and attached it to the schrader valve on the fuel rail. Post the fuel pressure with 1) the key on and 2) at idle. A choked fuel pressure can cause a lean mixture also. A tip is that its both banks running lean, so it has to be a condition that can impact both banks at the same time. Mike

Problem found:: I used starter fluid and sprayed around gaskets. Guess what: Engine starts to kill, sprayed around the 1 inch rubber coupler between the throttle body and intake gasket right on top must have leak underneath belly but can not see it.

Thanks Logan and everyone else on helping me solve this problem. You guys are the best.

So it WAS the rubber coupler that I posted a photo of above that has the RED CIRCLE around it? Glad you found your problem.

PS, be careful with STARTER FLUID..... If that is what you meant, its very flammable

Thanks again to everyone

Raz

Raz, please confirm that it was the rubber coupler so that we can complete this thread. I am not clear on that yet, the mention of intake gasket clouded the thought...

This would be at least the second time we have had this issue. Very interesting. Thanks
