suspension noise.. ping ping ping from rear

I have a strange noise comming from the rear suspension that goes ping ping ping (sounds like a hot motor cooling off ony louder), you can hear the noise from 50 yards or more. You can also make it happen somtimes when you push down on the rear of the car. The noise seems to be coming from the right rear of the car.

I haven't crawled under the car yet to check it out, was hoping someone could help me identify what it might be first. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

If your 98 is the same as my 96, the air suspension compressor is located at the right rear area.

That is true but that was replaced a couple of years ago also the power should be off on the compressor when the key is off (I think :-). Good thought though.

Thanks.

When you said motor cooling off, that is what came to mind, that motor as there are no other motors back there. I would put your hand on the compressor and see if its overheating

Could this be your muffler system cooling?

When do you hear the ping ping ping sound? After parking the car and getting out? Or is it all the time? How many pings do you hear during each occurrance?

If you hear the pinging sound when you get out of the car and or while pushing down on the rear bumper then I would suspect your right rear knuckle needs replacing. When my rear knuckle went bad I would get 2-4 pings in a row after parking and exiting the car. I could induce the pinging by pushing down on the bumper and also by pulling up on the wheel well on the afflicted side.

The bushing inside the sleeve dried up causing a metal to metal contact. When weight (ex: getting in and driving or pushing on the bumper) was added it would cause the knuckle to load up so to speak. The ping sound was the knuckle unloading. It almost sounds like the pinging is coming from the rim itself. Since the knuckle is located directly behind the wheel it's easy to see why that is.

This sounds exactly like my problem as I hear the pings just after I park the car and get out. It is not all the time but normally can be heard for 5-10 minutes after I park. I would say maybe 10-15 pings on each occurrence (could be more, never really counted:-).

Did you do replace the knuckle yourself or have it done? Do you remember the cost?

Thanks.

Sounds like we're getting close. One last test before we assume it's the knuckle. Either pull up on the bumper or grab ahold of the wheel well and slowly pull up. Do you hear the pinging sound?

Not so much pulling up but definitely pushing down. As soon as you touch the rear end with as little as one finger you start to hear the noise.

Here are some other posts regarding your problem with knuckle prices and where to buy them.

Pardon me for not getting this in sooner, but the leveling system stays on for 5 minutes after you turn off the key "to allow for levelling when you remove luggage or golf clubs from the trunk."

  • 2 months later...

Just wanted to post a follow up to this problem, I replaced the knuckle and that seems to have fixed the problem. The part was very easy to replace but also very expensive, got the part from gmotors.com for just under $400.00 . BTW very impressed by gmotors.com, great price and quick service.

Thanks to everyone for the help and special thanks to Regis for suggesting the knuckle..

That's terrific news. Yeah the price of a knuckle is enough to take one's breath away. I'm still trying to catch mine lol. Isn't this Cadillac site great? The information and help on here has saved me thousands of dollars on repairs. Thanks for following up and posting about the successful repair.

Yes gmotors.com is great, I love those guys. Glad to hear you go it fixed, the symptom (ping ping ping from rear, only hear it when the car is parked) did not direct me to the rear knuckle, it would not have occured to me since when the car is parked the rear knuckle is motionless. It was a good pick up by Regis.

Does your car handle any better with the new knuckle?

I would say this was something that did not really effect the handling (at least not yet :-) but more of an anoying noise when parked and also when going over bumps. That said it was obvious that the bushing was in bad shape just by looking at it and if it got much worse it probably would have caused handling issues.
