tailpipe smoke at takeoff

Recommended Posts

If its not leaking you need to do the WOT procedure to exercise and reseat the piston rings

This is the WOT procedure:

Add a bottle of Techron to a full tank of gas

Do only on dry pavement

Make sure oil level is good

Check tranny fluid, make sure its level and color are good

Make sure coolant level is good and coolant temp is good and up to operating temp

Get on a highway that is empty

Do 40 MPH

Drop the tranny into 2, RPMS will rise

press the accelerator to between 3/4 to full depending upon the health of your heart, till you hit 70,

Let off the accelerator, because you are in 2nd, the tranny will haul the car down

Let it slow to 40

then REPEAT that pattern 10 times and then drive home

The high RPM acceleration exercises, loosens and reseats the rings and the high vacuum deceleration also exercises the ringes, sucks out carbon and blows it out violently out the exhaust. Carbon will be purged from the piston tops and dome of the combustion chamber. Use techron additive or use a fuel with techron for clean combustion chambers

Do this once a week for a month, then once a month but only as needed and safely. Don't abuse it. The engine loves long trips (as do I), and it will come alive by taking them, long sustained 70 mph for 4 hours on a new oil change does it wonders

Always do WOTs entering highways to merge to get up to speed as a daily medicine but be careful.

Do not let the engine 'warm up' in the morning, get in and drive it

You know you are driving this engine hard enough when you accelerate and have no smoke out the exhaust, drive it hard its a high performance engine with an aggressive cross hatch in the cylinders for lubrication, the down side is an engine that can use excessive oil if its babied

Very interesting,

Is the WOT procedure advisable on a engine with over 181,000 miles on it?

Thanks

You want to do it gingerly, that is why I said 3/4 to full, if its a relatively low mileage tight solid no knock engine have at it. I know many will disagree with me, but I would prefer not taking a high mileage engine to the RED LINE repeatedly (but I am conservative), but say you go to 60 or 65 instead of 70.

Its not only the engine but the tranny, the deceleration and full throttle acceleration to me puts strain on the tranny, so the health of the tranny to me is important.

There is no doubt that an engine is better off for doing the WOT procedure, but a long high speed (65-75) drive is also good using Techron to clean the combustion chamber.

I just would be careful and see how your particular powertrain reacts, keep in mind that simply doing a WOT getting on the a highway is a good daily stretching also

I also like to take care of tailgating by flooring the engine and fogging out the car behind me.

I do that often... and it sounds so good...:D

Well, my engine doesn't knock and the tranny shifts very smoothly. I have already been "getting on it" pretty regularly and It seems to only get better and better....

I just need to get to the bottom of the instrumentation problems :-/

Don't let your first ride be your last ride in a Cadillac!

That's awesome I never knew.................... How did you find this out?

Find what out, the WOT procedure?

We used to have a member who came here everyday, you will see him referred to as the guru. He was on the Northstar Powertrain design team. The guru described this WOT procedure to us. He described it a little different, we have modified it to run from 40 to 70 to take it easy on the engine. The guru used to say, take the engine to the red line, the two engines have different red lines (the Y and 9 engines). I think FULL throttle to the RED LINE is great for a new engine, but feel its excessive for a used engine.

I have found that doing the WOT procedure will lessen the oil consumption, the day I got my car, I was using 1 quart per 1000 miles, doing the WOT procedure, I got it up to 1 quart per 2000 miles. My car was babied before I got it.

Are you kidding me my 96 Deville loves this treatment. I dont even know what tailpipe smoke is lol. and I am fastly approaching 195000 miles. It sees redline and WOTs a lot. I am very nice to my cadillacs. They both love it and show me every time I drive them. My 96 Deville burns 1 quart per oil change and gets good fueel economy. How many people hitting 200000 miles can say that. In the morning as soon as I see the RPMs hit 950 I am gone. Anytime else it is just start and go. NO idl time, even in the winter. They retain the interior heat very well, and heat up well.

GM FAN FOREVER

Nice, clean, luxury= fine automobile
