winterset
I created a new post as part of my reading on the most recent "what oil to use post", as I thought the question might get answered better. When my car started consuming oil, my first concern was if it will damage the cat. again, monthly WOT's solved the consumption issue, but I still use some oil, as probably many N*'s. even at the worst cases reported in oil consumption, is there any long term damage to the cat? how is the life expectancy of the cat? I read recently that the exhaust on cars similiar to mine was rated excellent. with ZDP/ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) removed, are there any other additatives that can still harm the cat? I use Mobile 1 synthetic. is there less/more/same amount of additatives going thru the cat?

JohnnyG
I had a great reply going until I tried to underline something, then I lost all the text. I'll reply tomorrow when the frustration wears off. Until then study the ZN and Moly levels in the VOA's (virgin oil analysis) at this site. Look at Redline, Delvac 1300 M1 and Havoline in particular. (check out STP if you REALLY want a thrill (the thick stuff). http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultima...?ubb=forum;f=11 Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed. JohnnyG
Well, I'm back. I'm going to try to attach an image to this post that outlines the most common causes of CAT failures. Mostly it says Lead, Silicon, Phosphorus, Sulfur (we're now selling low sulfur gasoline..especially in California), Other Contaminants, (whatever that means), and Cars that burn oil. Also, anything that might damage a sensor and cause the fuel mixture to go high (more sulfur and more heat). I'm sure Zinc and Tin is right up there with lead. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/catalytic-converter1.htm This might help too. Well, since it looks like the image didn't make it, it also says antifreeze. Just check out the link. Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed. JohnnyG
http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultima...ic;f=1;t=014333 Just happened to run across this post tonight. I know you are not considering a diesel rated oil for its antiwear capabilities, but consider the information presented here in your quest for the perfect motor oil. There are some good links in there as a bonus. Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed.
