Hi everyone!

Today my SRX make me a bad suprise, few seconds after start engine in exhaust become white smoke.

Since last week every start was with smoke but only few seconds, then runs properly.

Today was different, was a really a lot of white smoke, I found, that coolant is gone.

If I have broken head gasket, is it possible that smoke is in both exhaust pipe? Maybe some of You have the same, or know what is a reason?

You can do a quick test by purchasing a Napa block tester it's about $50 and made by Balkamp, go to NAPA online to purchase it.  It's a very easy test, the solution changes colors if you have combustion byproducts in the coolant and you'll have your answer.  It's a multiple use test I've had my tester about four years now and probably have tested about 30 head gaskets.

Smell the exhaust and see if it smells sweet, indicating coolant is present.  Sometimes certain times of the year you'll get steam from the exhaust because of condensation in the exhaust and it is normal.  You may only have a coolant leak in that case.

Thanks. I will buy this tester.

If you test so much head gaskets, is it possible that smoke from coolant is in both exhausts?

I doubt very much that you have dual exhausts the entire run from the engine to the tips, do you know if you do?   As an example, the FWD cars merge both sides into one, before the CAT, and then it branches out to dual mufflers and tips at the rear.  I don't know your car well enough to know if you have TRUE dual exhausts.

In fact, exhaust pipe are connected like on picture.

Is another way to get coolant to exhaust? I chnage head gasket 8k miles ago, that's why I looking for another explanation if exists.

If its head gasket, how to find witchone? It's nesessery to change both?

Maybe I can find leak by watching on the spark plug?

I'm not mechanic, but trying do my best.

Ohhhhh, I did not know you changed a head gasket 8,000 miles ago.  That changes the whole thought process.

As you can see, both banks join at the cat.  So its not possible to look at the exhaust and know which side might have a problem.

A bad head gasket sometimes will cause a misfire, obviously you can find it that way.  A real time engine analyzer will also provide misfire counts that can lead you.

I would pressurize the cooling system to 18 psi and see if it holds pressure, BUT!, if it does not hold pressure you DO NOT want to drive coolant into a cylinder and hydrolock the engine and damage it.  Be careful here, if it leaks down, pull the plugs if you don't see an external leak.

You can do a leakdown test also, that will show the cylinder and can drive air into the cooling system causing bubbles in the tank.

How did you repair the head bolt holes in the block?  Timesert?

Ill look for the link under your name and look at it for more details.

No unfortunately, its not good that you didn't timesert or use norms inserts, the block needs to be repaired but you know that.

I think I recall your thread and recall you didn't timesert.  I have been away for awhile but plan to be around more.

What do you plan to do?

Did you do the HG job without removing the engine?

Are you misfiring?  If you are, a realtime engine analyzer should be able to see the misfire counts and P030X codes.  Pull the plug and then it may look obvious.

We will help anyway we can

Pretty sure this is the engine that some time back had the stripped out bolts on the center timing chain gear.

This engine should be using the newer head bolt M11 x 2.0.

Requires tool J-42385-2030 to fix....kit is available as a rental.

Good memory @Logan.  I am surprised he only had this thread, I recall @Kris Poland telling me he didn't timesert the block but that is not mentioned.  Maybe we discussed it via PM
