Jeffrey Collins
I have a 1997 cadillac deville d'elegance that is putting out white smoke. It also shows a temp of 230 when attempting to drive. Have stopped driving due to not knowing what the issue can be. But if i soy idle, the smoke will get worse as the temp rises. What could my issue be? New member looking for help!!! Bruce Nunnally
hi, welcome. Usually white smoke means lean, perhaps due to coolant in the exhaust, and black smoke means rich, perhaps due to oil in the exhaust. If the car is overheating that is another indicator something is wrong in the cooling system. Coolant can enter the combustion process through a blown head gasket, failure of the head bolts, or failure of an water-to-oil oil cooler. If you go to an average shade tree mechanic they may guess the head gasket. That may be the case, but needs confirmation via investigation. If it is the headgasket or bolts, repair can cost $1500-10,000, which is the range from repair by an independent specialist to replacement by a dealer. If it is the oil cooler (less likely) repair might be $400-750. First, determine if you have coolant or exhaust gases in the oil. Next, determine where they are entering. Then repair. BodybyFisher
You can determine if you have a bad had gasket by doing a simple test. Either go to a napa or find them on line and buy the Balkamp head gasket tester, read the directions and do the test. Very easy. The coolant level needs to be at least 2 inches from the top of the tank. If the solution changes color its because of the presence of combustion by products and you have a bad head gasket. winterset
Does the white smoke smell like fuel or is it a sweet smell. Sometimes a faulty fuel pressure regulator can cause a rich condition resulting in white smoke. An engine burning rich can cause the engine to run hot especially if the cooling system is already compromised.
BodybyFisher
Winterset, caused me to think about this. Before you buy the Balkamp tester, if you stick your nose into the coolant tank and take a wiff if you have a bad headgasket you may smell exhaust fumes. When my 96s blew, there was a distinct exhaust smell. But for a definitive answer, the Balkamp tester is the way to go.
