Shatzy
Gentlemen, I've encountered a problem with a faulty fuel gauge on my 2000 Deville, VIN # 1 G 6 K D 5 4 Y 5 Y U 2 4 1 0 0 5 . One minute the fuel gauge reads full, a few mile later it reads 1/4 full! I've been filling the tank every 250 miles to be safe until I can get the problem diagnosed. Questions: Is there a way I can diagnose what parts are bad that doesn't require special test meters or tools? Is the fuel level sensor part of the fuel pump, located below the spare tire? Do I need to replace the entire fuel pump? Thanks for any advice offered. Steve M. im MD
Texas Jim
The first thing I would do is run a couple of cans of TECHRON thru it. You can get it an most any parts store... like Auto Zone or O'Rileys

Texas Jim
Steve, If I am not mistaken... the fuel gage sending unit (fuel level sensor) is part of the fuel pump. To fix it, will require replacing the fuel pump.
Cadillac Jim
Before I bought any parts, I would check for a wiring problem in the harness where it connects to the fuel tank assemblies. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars.
