slayrdave
My Deville just turned over 90k miles. It has been mostly trouble free ... Replaced AC compressor, Computer, ABS Relay, Spark Plugs/wires/Distributer/Fuel filter,Front Brake Lines/Pads/Rotors,Rear Drums/Shoes/Cylinders. 8 Fuel Injectors- My next project will be to install passive struts to replace original electronic struts. My question is what future repairs can I expect ??? Still is a beautiful car and I want to keep it a dependable daily driver.
BodybyFisher
The car is over 20 years old. The 4.9 while a good engine is an aging engine. The cylinder sleeves are sealed at the bottom with a rubber seal. When this seal goes bad, coolant can get into the crankcase. Oil analysis testing (Blackstone Labs) can detect the presence of coolant in the oil. Whatever you do make sure you use the GM recommended cooling supplement tablets with this engine to minimize the possibility of coolant getting into the oil. However, in spite of using the tablets, some members (Marika) were unable to solve the problem and needed to get rid of the car as the car suffered from overheating problems. I do not know if the engine can be repaired once this happens but you may want to look into a remanufactured engine if you plan to keep the car long term. KHE
Last I knew, the o-rings at the cylinders were replaceable. The best thing is to use the GM or Bars Leaks sealant tablets at each coolant change. KHE
Thanks Kevin, that is good to know At the rate GM is discontinuing parts, it is anyone's bet if they are still available today... Someone has to stock them if there are rebuilt engines available. Kevin '93 Fleetwood Brougham '05 Deville '04 Deville 2013 Silverado Z71
the gold2
Cross referenced thread. http://caddyinfo.ipb...showtopic=16269 also this, looks like Rolls and Bentley used similar rubber O rings.... http://rrtechnical.info/sz/sz80/e.pdf refer to sections E4-1 and E4-2 illustrated as well. But for something cautiously off topic, some guy put a caddy 4.9 liter engine into a Miata !! http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=162563
