Tech II scanner anybody?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm trying to diagnose a P0300 on my girlfriend's 2000 Seville SLS. I live in Minneapolis, MN and I would like to have use of a tech 2 for an hour or so to see if I can trace down what is going on. If anybody has a tech 2 and would be willing to let me come over and hook the Seville up, I will bring you some of your favorite beer, or do some other favor. Any help would be appreciated!

You dont need a tech 2 to diagnose that P0300. My guess is that you have a bad coil pack, find a good coil pack and swap it in, 2000 was known for bad coil packs

But I did some more investigating today. I found cylinder 8 was fouled with gasoline. I'm not used to working on things with spark plugs anymore! Anyhow I hear the 2000 northstar had some serious problems with ignition packs going bad. I checked the resistance of every coil pack and they were all around 5k ohm. The car runs like it has an almost solid dead miss. Now I need to get the car she just bought back to the shop so they can put the module on instead of me. Those things are like $200 per bank. So if you have a control module laying around I would love to have a spare!

Other diagnostics I performed was to check the resistance of every fuel Injector. They were all at 23 Ohms.

Get one at the scrap yard to swap in for testing purposes. I noted in my prior post that the coil packs were problematic

Check the plug for cracks in the porcelain or for carbon tracks.

Yeah, the ignition cassettes are generally pretty reliable. Save yourself a LOT of money and get one from a bone yard. Maybe even pick up a spare if you are worried about it.

P.S. If you should find any carbon tracking on the plug, be sure to replace the boot when you replace the plug because the carbon track is impregnated in the boot and will transfer back to the new plug.

I figured I would update this thread while I was thinking about it. Turns out it was a bad coil pack. But anyhow, it runs much better. It still has an intermittent shake at that isn't serious enough to set off the CEL. After pulling a few plugs, and finding the one that smelled like raw fuel (#8), I told her she needed the coil pack and to order some new OEM plugs from GMPartsdirect.com. Does anybody know the gap specs? I remember back to the 4.9 L was .060, but it seemed to me the N* had a smaller plug gap.

Look on the label under the hood, it should be there

I looked under the hood. I don't see the emissions label. Weird, huh? By the way, I'm still looking for the Tech 2, because I would like to program two new key fobs that I purchased for the car. If anybody has one, please let me know!
