rockfangd
Hello All, so this weekend I ws replacing my best friends transmission in his 96 deville and I noticed a pretty largee coolant leak on the driver side of the engine above the transmission. The unit looks like it goes from the rear head to the front head and down from there, it has the egr pipe going to it and I believe the EGR is on it also. I would almost say it looks like a EGR cooler and a coolant passage. Where it is leaking is at the gaskets wheere it mounts to both the front and rear head. If anyone could shed some light on this I would appreciate it GM FAN FOREVER Nice, clean, luxury= fine automobile
BodybyFisher
That is the coolant crossover, the water pump is attached to it. There are 4 seals, 2 on each head, that need replacing. I replaced them on my 96. Rough job, but if your tranny is out it might be easier. Here is a photo of my old crossover seals you can see how pieces break out of them Here is a photo of how the seal material is loose Here is a photo of a damaged seal Another Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
Ranger
That seal looks burnt Mike. Rockfangd, Be advised, that crossover is a royal PITA to change. BBF can attest to that.

That is why I wrote "Rough Job" above. The dealer gets about 7 hours for this job and he has a lift.... Yes Ranger those seals look burned, probably from excaping coolant under pressure that escapes as steam. There was evidence of the cooling supplement on those seals also... a reason why I will use the supplement Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
rockfangd
ouch, darn these sophistocated cadillacs, lol. I have already installed the new transmission but they look like you almost have to pull the engine to remove them. Honestly those pics are a wonderful reference, I thank you very much for all of your info. Those gaskets look just like the same material as the original W-body engin intake gaskets. BodybyFisher
Oh good, since you like photos, here are a couple more that might be helpful, Here is the crossover out of the engine Here is the evidence of the cooling supplement tablets that I noted above, there was a leak here, so the cooling supplement coagulated here on one of the crossover seals Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
BodybyFisher
If you decide to do this ill link you to my thread. The hardest bolts to get at are the lower right two, you need to remove the PRNDL module to get at it.... mark the position of that module first. front wiring conduit must come out also..not fun Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
