joebargiel
If anyone can shine some light on my situation, it would be a great help. Trying to diagnose a surge tank problem. Got a check coolant level warning coming on. No overheating problem whatsoever, temperature always stays normal. Feed line nipple out the bottom of the tank has a crack and a leak. I will replace the tank (assuming I can find one), but is it normal for the level of the coolant to change dramatically? Attempted repair and filled tank to "low cold" fill line, ran it about 20 min variable conditions and temp got to normal. Checked it 4 hours later and level was half of the fill line level. Ran it again for 20 min, sat for 3 hrs, checked the tank again while running and there was no coolant in the tank whatsoever. Is my car simply pushing out excess coolant or is the crack enough to cause that much of a problem? What is the correct way to ensure the proper level of coolant in the system? Texas Jim
The tank is pressurized when the engine is running. If it has a crack in it and is leaking...then that is where your coolant is going. The leak has to be stopped before you can maintain proper coolant level. Which probably means replacing the cracked tank.
BodybyFisher
The tank is about $125 from the dealer, I replaced mine last year. They crack, you can not fix it, to hold 15 to 18 PSI, its leaking.
