Blower motor on 96 eldorado

Recommended Posts

Now i just tested a new blower i bought by just disconnecting the plug (plug is a little melted) from the old one and connecting the new one,the blower blows but it doesnt cut off even when i turn it off the control inside and or keys not in at all...What else should i check before i replace the blower and it end up going bad again?

What else should i check?

If your car has a separate blower motor resistor, it may well be that.

Exactly. The blower is connected to the 12V source via a small module (two packs of cigarettes) that extends down into the air stream for cooling purposes. That module sets the speed of the blower and reacts to input from the climate control system and the body computer. On my car it's not a resistor, but a big power transistor. In most Caddys it's held in place by three screws and has two connectors. The blower motor can fail in different ways, but one failure will fry that module.

If you pull one of those connectors, the blower will stop. If you replace the module, you'll be back in control (assuming the blower motor is ok and doesn't fry the replacement module).

They're on eBay at various prices. Look for Dan Isabell in NY - he's a reliable Caddy parts dude.

You can also pull the module and inspect. In some, the power transistor is sealed in an epoxy housing. In others it's exposed. If you can see the power transistor (looks like a very thick nickel with tabs screwed to the big aluminum heat sink), it's replaceable if you can find one with similar characteristics.

KHE who is familiar with these Northstar blower motors posted this, hopefully he will chime in later,

You cannot hook 12v to the blower - it has three leads - a ground, power and a control signal. The control signal is a pulse width modulated (PWM)signal from the ACM to allow infinite blower speeds. The PWM signal varies in duty cycle to allow infinite control of the blower motor

my guess is that the ACM is bad. Where did you get this new blower motor, is it new?

There is not a separate blower motor module on these cars... it is built into the blower motor as a unit.

Is the replacement motor a new motor? If so, the problem may be the melted plug.

Unplug the blower motor and measure the voltage at the grey wire on the plug. Is it equal to the battery voltage or less than battery voltage?
