second new motor at 77,000 miles?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, new here.

I own a 2000 Deville, northstar of course, bought with 65,000 miles on it. Burned 4 quarts of oil in frst 3,000 miles. Lithia motors replaced with new rebuilt motor from Jasper Engines, bill was $6,500.00, no cost to me. Now we have developed a lower end knock at 77,000 miles, Jasper is sending another new rebuilt motor, again at no charge to me. Just the other day, service engine soon light came on, code is PO741, local caddy dealer says bring it in, will cost around $2,200.00 to fix. I am told the tranny is the problem, torque converter lockup or something. Love the car, but this thing is killin' me, engine twice and tranny now too? Are the caddy people jerkin' me around or what? I'm told it is about $850.00 in parts to fix the tranny, the other $ 1,400.00 must be labor? WTF? any thoughts?

Thanks, Nodak

You could look at it this way...you have a 2000 model with a brand new engine.

Jasper makes good engines. Yours is the first one I have read about having to go back.

P0741 - TCC System Stuck Off

That is the "Torque Converter Clutch"...stuck off.

It means that the torque converter is not locking up as you get up to speed. I think there are several people here that have driven a long time with that code. You will just lose about 1 mpg in fuel mileage.

I think someone made the statement one time..."A $20 dollar part buried $2000 deep in the transmission."

Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

This guy made TWO posts and went away, and never came back.

As the poster above noted, we know nothing about the history of this engine. Some 2000 engines had their pistons replaced due to high oil consumption if I am not mistaken. But we know NOTHING about this engine, how it was driven, why the engine was replaced and why WOT procedures were not tried

It is NOT GM's fault that the Jasper engine knocked 12,000 miles later and they are replacing it for free

As for the TRANNY problem this member posted in another forum and I responded this way:

The Tranny problem could be taken care of while the engine is out very very easily. This could be the TCC solenoid or the torque converter.. Piece of cake while the carriage is down and the engine is out

Some people come here to vent and go away, hopefully we will get more information one day on this

Not at all Jim, I was not directing my post to you at all, I wanted to kind of pull these two thread together. I was unable to MERGE them for some reason...

As BBF mentioned, if it is done while the drivetrain is out for the engine replacement, labor should be MUCH less. Parts are probably the $20 solenoid.
