hnkstr
I have been reading your threads as I have recently purchased a 2000 Seville STS that ran like a charm, until yesterday leaving work. It had no power and runs extremely rough, pretty much out of the Blue. I checked the codes and had some current and some from history. I've owned the car a week and cleared the codes and then tested again and I still get the P0300 Current and P1599. irc u1016 history PCM Po300 Current PCM P1599 PCM P1617 SDM B0058 SDM U1040 History Changed the gas cap because it was a $13 fix and it did make a difference but did not fix the problem. Leaning towards Coil Packs or Catalytic converter? Anything else to ponder on this?
hnkstr
Forgot to mention the oil was low as well. From what I know about my older caddy, that is not uncommon, But I had to add 2.5 quarts last night.
Ranger
Might try checking the fuel pressure before throwing parts at it.
hnkstr
Thanks Ranger, but I'm not sure how to check the fuel pressure? I had it scanned and it came back with Misfires for Cylindars 2 and 7. I decided to change the plugs and they were in very poor shape, so was the air filter. Replaced plugs and air filter and that helped, but I still get a code for Cylindar 2 misfire. We bought a scanner and it states P0302 misfire errors and also has the following blinking at the top (its an Innova 3100 e scanner) C - Catalyst Monitor EV - Evaporative system Monitor OH - Oxygen Sensor Heater Monitor O - Oxygen Sensor Monitor The misfire is always in Cylindar 2. Where do I start next? Can a coil pack be bad and bad just for one cylindar? Can the Catalytic converter or oxygen sensor be bad? If so, why would Cylindar 2 keep coming up? Fuel Injector for Cylindar 2? The Service Engine light now goes away but comes back. It seems at high speed coasting (60 mph with cruise on) it goes away. Under load it seems to come back. hnkstr
Now, I replaced the Plugs, but did not replace the Boots for the plugs. I was just told that can cause the same issues if they are bad. Is that true?
BodybyFisher
Buy a fuel pressure gage and attach it to the schrader valve on the fuel rail. If you are having a mis fire in cylinder 2, Check compression Check spark This is a COP ignition? Try swapping the COP to another cylinder and see if the mis follows it.. If not, check the injector I have never seen a scanner show a specific cylinder mis fire, if that scanner does that I am interested in one.. I saw it at SUMMIT racing for $130 Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

I was just told that can cause the same issues if they are bad. Is that true? Yes ..it is possible that the wire or the boot for that plug is bad. hnkstr
Where is Cylindar 2? In the back or front? Not sure which coil to take off
hnkstr
Ok, found out that the front is #2 Cylindar. Replaced the 4 boots in the front and the misfire didn't come on right away, but once I got it on the highway and gave er the misfire came pack for P0302. Well, replace a Coil now? Can the Coil be bad for #2 only?

I have a 96 and its different, so I can't give you actual experience, someone will chime in... hnkstr
I was told to do a compression test, but what would that tell me? To see if the Cylindar itself it having issues? Crap, wish I could find one just to slap on to see if that is it..

Crap, wish I could find one just to slap on to see if that is it.. IF #2 cylinder is having a compression problem from a burned or hanging valve you will MIS FIRE. And you are correct, having a known good coil is a good way to diagnose problems. As I said, IF you can swap the coil to another location, and then the MISS moves to that location you know you have a coil problem Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
hnkstr
How do you swap the coil to another location? You can't take those pins (not sure what they are called in the coil) out and move them to another location in the Coil, can you? Take the far left one out and move it to the far right? Sorry, I'm an IT guy, not much of a mechanic although I'm learning a ton of late.. Or are those 4 individual points a coil each and the whole thing is a coil pack? BodybyFisher
See this thread, it looks like these coil packs are replaced by the BANK, see Logans statement.
