water pump

I am trying to replace my water pump on my 96 seville.

Got the special tool and the breaker bar but can;t get the thing off.

Turning clockwise would be turning towards the winshield correct?

Any ideas how to get the thing off.

It doesn't seem to want to budge!

Thanks

Mike

Why are you replacing the water pump? If it is in hopes of curing the overheating issue in your other thread, you're wasting your time. The car is overheating because the purge line is blocked...

It might be the tool. (Lisle?) Newer removal tools are heavier duty. I think one even has an attachment, with a nut to lock down the tool to prevent slipping.

FYI, I used the cheap Lisle, But it did slip a few times. I just persevered and then it worked.

when we put the tool on it it seems to keep slipping over the grooves. They may be rounded to bad

Is there any other way to get it off?

This tool is GM OEM. It'll lock down the socket to prevent slipping.

The pump seems to spin freely so your right don't think its it.Checking for a purge clog.Took the bolt off the purge line didn't seem like it was clogged there.Going to try the hose connected to the throttle body.I started the car and doesn't seem to be circulating through the upper radiator hose.Where else could it be clogged?

Thanks

I replaced the thermostat but took it back out and testing it in boiling water. The spring should push all the way in correct?

Could maybe the cap on my surge tank have anything to do with it?

As far as pulled headbolts not sure how to do this?

Thanks

Not sure how to tell if the thermostat ids working or not.

I put the new one in boiling water and it looked the same as it did before

i put it in. When the thermostat opens does this mean the spring should be all the way back?

And when its closed then the spring should be all the way down like it is now?

In boiling water the spring didn't push back at all.Just trying to understand how it works.

Thanks

Mike

Ditto.

Why are you replacing the water pump? Is it leaking? If no coolant was coming out of the purge line, did you solve that?

The water pump is spinning freely so i decided not to change it.Was i right how the thermostat works?

If i was then the new one i bought was bad.Going to replace it again with another new one.

The purge line is the line that has a metal nipple about an inch long and has a bolt connected to the engine correct?

I took this hose off and put something in that hose but it didn't seem clogged at all. What about the hose on top of the throttle body could it be clogged there?I'm going to try a new thermostat and put a new surge tank cap on it and see if it is better.

If the water pump wasn't working wouldn't this stop the flow of coolant circulating through? How can this not make your car overheat?

Bare with me i'm kind of a newbie! If you could please list everywhere i should check for a clog and i will check them all.

Please be as specific as you can remember newbie lol

Thanks alot for your help!

PLEASE read what I posted previously. I circled where the BOLT WITH A HOLE in it is located. It is NOT the HOSE the clogs. it is where the HOSE connects. I said REMOVE THE BOLT, and clear the HOLE in the middle of the BOLT.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE COOLANT COMING OUT OF THE PURGE LINE AT THE TANK YOU NEED TO FIND OUT WHY.

REMOVE THAT BOLT IT IS PROBABLY CLOGGED. THE GD HOSE DOES NOT CLOG.

The stat sounds ok.

I am not upset. Please read what we post carefully. YOU are very very lucky that you found the purge line clogged. Remove that bolt first, and stick anything through it that you need to clear it. A drill bit, etc.. If you are lucky, this is all that is wrong, there is NO need to go further. BUT REMOVE IT, do not clear it in place with air etc.

Its not a matter of being smart, everybody learns, but please follow directions and you will be fine. I thought we were pretty clear as to where it was located, what to clean and why it causes you to over heat. I do not want to see you do any additional work.
