Crankshaft Position Sensors

MrEldo97

Recommended Posts

I will be assisting my son in changing the crankshaft position sensors in his '03 STS.

"A" is setting codes so we're changing both. Looks like a tight fit - any tips, tricks etc.

I don't relish the thought of getting under his car so I'm going to make him do it, supervise him and have a few cold ones

while I watch.

I appreciate any and all advice, gentlemen.

Thanks,

Roger

On my 96 there is an inspection cover that has 4 bolts in it the cover is about 3 feet wide. Take that cover off. I personally would remove the oil filter and the oil filter adapter to give yourself some room. You will need 3/8 ratchet, extensions and a universal, the adapter bolts are 10 mm. Mike

PS, go buy new oil filter adapter seals from the dealer and replace them when you reinstall it. Hold them in place with some sort of non hardening gasket/seal sealer

On the '98 to '04 Seville body style, there is a plastic cover from the bottom lip of the bumper cover to the front of the cradle and all the way across side to side. Remove the plastic fasteners (9 or 10?) and drop the cover.

The oil filter and filter adapter must come down to provide enough room to reach the sensors. New O rings for the filter adapter and the crankshaft position sensors are recommended. I find that 1/4" drive tools are more than enough.

Thanks Gents,

I'll order the O rings for the filter adapter and we'll get this job done. He's driving the car from Tampa Bay to Massachusetts

in a few weeks and I want these replaced when he hits the road...

What is he doing in Mass?, going to school? I am not sure but, keep the upper and lower sensors and connectors separate, I know there is a difference between the upper and lower connectors and if I am not mistaken the upper and lower sensors are different (but I am not 100% sure about the difference between the sensors)

He's going to school down here. He couldn't get a job in Mass while we were up there!

He's driving up with his girlfriend to visit friends and relatives.

I was born and brought up in Worcester, then owned property in Sutton for 25 years.

Got tired of the sh**ty weather, lousy economy, outrageous cost of living and screwy

left wing politics so we picked up, packed up, left Kennedy Country and moved down here.

You wanna see what Obama has in store for the country; take a tour down Main St. Worcester

via Google Street View and that will cure your weakness...his best bud Deval "DeVille" Patrick is Gov.

Seriously, Mass' decline started 30 years ago and has only accelerated.

My son goes to school at Westfield State in Westfield, Mass outside Springfield. Relative to what you are saying, those 15 girls that got pregnant together lived in Glouster, Mass.. My son has had his fill of Mass and wants to come home to New York.. I used to love Cape Cod, Buzzards Bay, New Bedford, Salem and Rockport with my parents when I was a kid. I couldn't help but think of Kennedy, Kerry and Deval yesterday when I saw this story from Cape Cod show up

When I got home from work and was mixing a drink before dinner, "World Blues Tonight" was on and had the story about those dingbat girls in Mass. that were pregnant... Unbelievable what this world has come to... There were some girls that were disappointed that they were not pregnant... I'll bet their parents were real proud of them......

Cape Ann trash...

Gloucester is in very rough shape since the fishing industry up there collapsed and the democRats who rule in Boston

have totally ignored the lack of work up there, just as they have everywhere in Mass outside the Boston Beltway.

The rest of the state outside of Boston is just like Appalachia. It's too bad really but one party rule leads to neglect, corruption

abuse of power and a general screwing of the citizenry. Think "Big Dig". We're glad we left that vale of tears.

My wife is from New York - Troy another depressed area.

In the early '70s I spent many weekends at that national seashore in Truro - Marconi Station Beach I believe it's called.

IMO the most beautifull beach I've ever been to. In those days It was a well kept secret - no one went there except only the

few who knew it existed. Herring Cove Beach outside of P-Town was a quasi nude beach then, but people g@y or straight

behaved themselves. Provincetown from the late '60s to the mid '70s was quite an experience...

If you're a boomer born in the late '40s or early '50s Cambridge and Provincetown were the Haight-Ashburys of the east.

I'll never forget it...

I agree Truro is a beautiful beach, if I recall it had high cliffs... cape cod is beautiful in the off season to me...

  • 2 weeks later...

I was a dumb sh*t and pulled the connector off Crankshaft Position Sensor A.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 2003 Seville/STS?

I do believe the green wire goes in pos A, Yellow in B and Yellow/blk in C on the connector.

Can anyone confirm?

Much appreciated!

Not to rub salt in the cut, but, I posted this in your OTHER crank sensor thread, so you can't say that I didn't warn you.

Keep the upper and lower sensors and connectors separate, I know there is a difference between the upper and lower connectors and if I am not mistaken the upper and lower sensors are different (but I am not 100% sure about the difference between the sensors)

My 96 manual states this. This may not help you as you are citing different colors, but I hope this helps. Maybe someone with a 97 manual can look at this diagram in the ENGINE CONTROLS SECTION subsection Ignition Control Module, Thanks

Crank Sensor A

Yellow

and

Purple

Crank Sensor B

Black and Whilte

and

Blue and White

Thanks, but I mean I pulled the 3 wires right out of that connector! No room, short pigtail, good yank and out they came!

This repair is either going to cost me a 100 bucks or a grand!

A 2003 wiring diagram will confirm what I think the connections are...

Do me a favor and update your profile to include the 03, I looked at your profile and it shows 97. I know you stated 03 in your first post, but I didnt see that. Anyway, yes you are correct, the schematic should be able to help nicely to tell you what colors go where.

Listen call the dealer, they may have replacement crank sensor plugs, and you can just solder, shrink wrap and tape the leads and save you some headaches.

According to my '04 diagrams (same engine controls), the color scheme above is correct for sensor B.

sensor A is

A = LT GRN

B = YELLOW/BLK

C = LT BLU/WHT

I have a pigtail on order too, will be here this afternoon.

I was also able to locate some terminals - talk about looking for a needle in a haystacK

Anyway, they're crimped on the wires and the plug is reassemble (looking at the face of the plug position A is on the left).

Just want to make sure "A" CPS is the upper one and I should be ready to go.

Just goes to prove - DON"T WORK ON A CAR AT NIGHT WHEN YOU"RE TIRED!

I would solder the joints. Shrink tubing is the best for something like that. You don't want corrosion to creep in that connection. I am sure that location gets pretty wet

Also, don't go shopping when you are HUNGRY!

The sensor above the crankcase split is sensor B.

That's what I thought, thanks.

I haven't used the pigtail (won't be here 'till this PM). I have the original plug put back together, Sensor B installed and I'm just trying to get that GD plug to "Click".
