Trunk Condensation

It sure is great having my 93 STS back on the road after having it TimeSerted. Driving it again proves to me why I needed/wanted to go ahead and make the repair as I am still smiling! :D

I have noticed however that after the long winter project, there seems to be condensation in the trunk.

The car was outside the entire winter with a heap of snow on it until it melted. This past winter was a challenge as our area was hit with record breaking snow accumulation.

I cleaned up the mildew that had formed under the spare tire cover, cleaned up the spare and placed everything back. Then noticed yesterday that there was some moisture again in this area. Do you think that this car just needs a good airing out to help evaporate any trapped moisture as a result of the deep freeze??

I am hoping for some good weather this weekend to remove the spare/cover and leave the trunk open to resolve. Anyone else experience this before? This is the first time I have noticed this issue with my car.

Thanks,

Petrov

Check the seal where the manual fuel release cable passes through the driver's side wheel well. I had a similar expierence with my '96 Seville - I noticed the trunk carpet was all wet. I removed the carpet and steam cleaned it. I also cleaned the trunk pan with a disinfectant. A few days later, it was wet again... This time, I removed the carpet and got inside the trunk with a flashlight. When my wife sprayed the hose in the driver's side rear wheel well, I saw water entering around the grommet where the fuel door manual release cable passes. I reinstalled it and cauked it in place and have not had a problem since. To this day, I have no idea how that grommet got dislodged.

Just got out of the trunk now BBF, thought I could TRUST the wife! :o

Kidding aside, I did check that grommet tinight for the fuel door release and it is perfect. I believe that the source was the undermat below the carpet which insulates the spare tire compartment. This undermat was extremely saturated and smelled of mildew. I have removed it and sprayed it with disenfectant & a deoderizer and left it to dry out.

Hopefully this is the source as I really believe that it didn't have a chance after the deep freeze of the hibernation. Will let you guys know. Thanks for the input.

Cheers,

Petrov

Ahh, see, my suspicions were correct! I had my 9 year old daughter lock me in the trunk once, while she sprayed water on the trunk lid, she cried the entire time,

  • 1 month later...

post-498-1217832963_thumb.jpgOk, here is the trunk update after quite some time. I just got back from Vegas vacation and still can't retire! :wipetears

It wasn't condensation after all, it was as the archives list - a trunk leak from a combination of the rubber liner and some cracks around the trunk (see pics)

I removed the rubber trunk liner, cleaned off the dirt/residue around the lip, resealed it with a water proof adhesive and tested it after it had dried for 24 hours. I had a bucket of water and poured it slowly down the channel from the rear window passenger side corner. The liner seemed to hold but I noticed I was still getting a trickle of water that was coming in by a metal crease which seems to be via these cracks that I took a picture of.

Any suggestions for repair? Should I just smooth a beed of silicone into these and run another test??

Thanks,

Petrov
