Gas Sender Unit

2000 STS MN

Recommended Posts

My next issue: My Gas gauge is flipping out. With previous cars I found this to be a faulty sender unit which was in the gas tank. While I was under the car with other issues I was looking at the gas tank and wondering how it would ever come out. As far as I can see it does not unless you cut out tail pipe protectors. I removed the carpet in the trunk and to great surprise I saw a access panel to I hope the sender unit and fuel pump?? This is my next project and could use some advice on replacing this IF this is the problem. Any tests to preform first ? No codes present for the malfunction.

Here is a discussion we had recently about the access panel:

I went through the replies, whooooo..... sounds like some fun on the site also! I will have to watch how I state issues. I will purchase a sender and get-r-done.

Thanks again

Don't kow if this is related but I have a 98 corvette that has had problems with the fuel guage readings and by changing gas to Shell or adding a few cans Techron to the tank clears the problem up. Something about gas with a high sulfur content fouls the sensor.

Just a thought.

Replacing the fuel pump at the same time might be a good idea because they seem to quit at the worse time and location. I just replaced mine on the side of the street after I had filled it full of gas. Mine has no access hole so I had to lower it with the tank full of fuel. Then on the other hand, my '88 Eldorado has 220k miles and is almost 20 years old.

I am leaning to replacing both. Sometimes certain year and models have inherent issues. Any 1999-2001 STS owners with fuel pumps going out with 120k+ miles?

Their are people that had them go out with less miles and some with more miles , does not seem to have a rhyme nor reason to when they go out, but when they do , you are just stuck, go ahead and replace both, well worth the effort and money, Last time i checked i am not sure that from the dealer that you do not have to buy both, Component replacement they call it.

Thanks, a little preventative maintenance may help me when it is 20degs below and snow coming.
