Erronious Error Codes

I'm pretty new at this code stuff so maybe you guys can steer me straight. New to me 92 CDV. 54500 miles. Experimented with "off/warmer" buttons to see what was there. Here's what comes up.

8.8.8

..E

E48

.E.E

E48

..F

F46

.7.0

TheE48 AND F46 make sense because I have seen them discussed on this board, but the other stuff? Is my diagnostic computer no good?

That's the good part.

Occasionally I hear what sounds to me like a rod knock at slow acceleration around 13-25 MPH. The car has been fairly well maintained per CARFAX, although the last known service was two years ago, but only had gone about 3000 miles in that time. I also have read about a false "rod knock" that relates to this 4.9L motor which is instead a bearing noise and is harmless. My question would be , How likely would it be a rod knock?

Beauty of a car if anyone would like to see http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/CadillacO...amp;m=s&o=0

Dark Plum, grey leather, white top.

Would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks.

CWW

Try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it you might be getting garbage, clean the battery connections..and see what happens.. Also, when it does the SEGMENT CHECK, make sure all the segments are lit

As far as the knock, do a search under number 1 bearing knock it has been discussed to death and see if that is what you are getting. I think you have a 4.9, it is known for the #1 bearing knock... I heavier grade of oil can sometimes quiet it, try Delvac 15W40. Do a search on Delvac 15W40 for more info. We have not heard much regarding a rod knock. The 4.9 engine is a great engine, I am not saying that you don't have a rod bearing knock but we have not hear of that problem at all.. If you want to determine if you have the #1 main bearing knock, remove the serp belt when the engine is cold and drive the car a few blocks, the #1 main bearing knock is related to the crank and serp belt pulling against eachother... you will see that in your searches... If its the #1 bearing knock when you remove the serp belt the knock will go away, DON'T DRIVE FAR AT ALL...!!! You will not have a water pump, alternator, power steering or AC... Your battery will need to be strong for this test as the coils draw hard! Drive one block...and back listening for the knock

8.8.8. - Trouble Codes beginning

..E - Beginning of first pass PCM Trouble Codes ("E" codes)

E48 - PCM Trouble Code (History)

.E.E - Beginning of second pass of PCM Codes

E48 - PCM Current Codes

..F - Beginning of first pass of BCM codes ("F" codes)

F46 - BCM code (History)

7.0 - Diagnostics done, system is ready for next diagnostic feature

It appears that you have an EGR system problem by the E48. It probably needs cleaned. The F46 indicates low refrigerant charge at one time.

Thanks for your response, it appears that the computer is working the way it should. I will tend to the two problems in due time.

I also appreciate BodybyFisher's advice in regards to the Devlac oil. I'll give that a try as well. This forum is packed full of interesting info and people, glad I found it.

Thanks again,

CWW

Let me clarify this is a 4.9? Now that I think about it the computer is different on a few years, why isnt this DIC reading out the same as the OBDI 91 and 92 Sevilles? Mike

You may be hearing spark knock considering the EGR code.

With the ignition off, remove the air intake and hold open the throttle using the linkage. See the two 1/2" diameter tubes? Those are the EGR delivery tubes and they should not be clogged with carbon. If they are, use a piece of coathanger and rod them out - go all the way through. Use a shop vac to clean up as much of the carbon as you can. The EGR tubes are likely caked up and as a result, there is little or no EGR flow which can result in spark knock.

The Coupe/Sedan deVilles up through 1993 did not have a message center like the 92+ sevilles. The codes were displayed on the climate control panel or fuel data center.

Thanks Kevin, I have run into that once before, I just could not remember what years.. For some reason I thought it was the Devilles that had an engine besides the 4.9, was there a 5.7 in some or am I thinking of the Fleetwood? What DIC system does the Fleetwood have since I know you are familiar with Fleetwoods... Thanks

Prior to 1987, all Fleetwoods were Fleetwood Broughams, 1987-1992, the name was Brougham and Brougham d'Elegance. From 1993, the Fleetwood and Fleetwood Brougham names were used.

Some Broughams from 1990 through 1992 had the 5.7 engine. The 307 cu-in engine was standard in the Fleetwood Brougham from 1986 - through 1990. In 1991, the 307 cu-in engine was replaced by the 305 cu-in TBI engine as the standard engine. The 5.7 (350 cu-in) engine with TBI was an optional engine that required the trailer towing package in 1990. In 1991 and 1992, the 5.7 TBI engine was an optional engine and it no longer required the trailer towing package. In 1993, the 5.7 TBI engine was the only engine available in the Fleetwood and Fleetwood Brougham. 1994-1996 Fleetwoods and Fleetwood Broughams received the LT-1 engine - 5.7L with port fuel injection...whew.

The OFF and WARMER buttons to enter diagnostics displayed the codes on the climate control panel. In 1993, it was still OFF and WARMER and the system changed to group the codes in categories selected by incrementing the pointer either 00 through 04 and then displaying the code by pressing the OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE button. The fan speed switch was used to scroll the pointers up or down. History codes are prefaced by a "1" - 132 would be a history code 32 for example.
