BodybyFisher
one of the accessories. Take a 3/4" hose about 3 feet long, and hold it to your ear and the accessory pulleys to localize the noise. Look at each pulley to see discoloring from the belt slipping on it... My guess is its probably the AC Compressor BUT, it could be anything, including the alternator, idler wheel, tensioner wheel, and maybe the power steering pump but I doubt that its the power steering pump. Bruce Nunnally
You are looking for a belt that is worn or loose, and for any pulleys or pulley tensioners that are loose, misaligned, or in poor shape. If you have never changed the main accessory drive belt on this car, now is a good time; the current one "don't owe you a dime". Ranger
With the engine off, put the square drive lug from a 1/2" breaker bar in the square hole on the back side of the tenioner and use it as a lever to remove belt tension. Then you can spin the idler and tensioner wheels to feel for roughness or excess play indicating bad bearings.

The Fred
The tensioner is the first suspect I would imagine MerryChristmas Be a Capitalist or work for one. Work for a Capitalist or be one. MerryChristmas
tekguy4
Another 2 cents: I had a squeeling problem on my Cherokee (yeah I know not a caddy) that just wouldnt go away, adjusting old belt witch looked fine didnt help, buying a middle of the line belt and new idler pulleys still had same problem, ready to go crazy, got a Goodyear Gatorback belt (with the cross grooving) and basically zero belt noise from then on. Moral is spend the extra $10 bucks and get a good belt. If the Gatorback is available for the Northstar, buy it.
BodybyFisher
I have the Gatorback also, its suppose to drop noise by 15db. See it here, http://www.goodyearbeltsandhose.com/cars/gatopoly.html I would find that squeel however, if its an idler wheel or a tensioner wheel you will end up loosing your serp belt at some point. Make sure your tensioner is not bound up and free and applying pressure. tekguy4
ALmost forgot, check the pulleys themselves and see if any gunk has accumulated in the grooves, if so clean em up.
