2001 DHS erratic RPM, erratic idle

dhs2001

Recommended Posts

My 2001 DHS started idling rough after I replaced the battery. I did the re-learn idle procedure, but that didn't help. When the enging is cold, it idles ok, then after it warms up and I get up to about 45 and something seems to 'kick in' and hold the rpm at about 15-1800, enough to cruise at 55 PMH. The codes indicate MAF problems, but I've replaced that. When I slow down, I have to brake hard to stop, then the idle hovers around 1k. If I rev the engine while in park, sometimes it hangs at 30-3500 and I have to shut the engine off. I hear what sounds like a vacuum leak and have used contact spray to try and locate it. Checked all hoses - no leaks. Any suggestions - besides taking it to a mechanic (my last resort). Thanks!

On my 2001....there is a rubber boot between the throttle body and the intake...its kind of goofy...mine had a split in it.

Intake has to come off to replace.

When Logan had that problem I had saved the photo, here is the photo of the boot location, Mike

Welcome.

Have you ever cleaned the TB? Might just be a carbon build up hanging up the throttle plate.

Looks like it comes off with two phillips head scews. Anything to look for when re-installing?

I think mine is okay. When I sprayed it with the engine running there wasn't any change in rpm or sputtering..

What comes off with two phillips head screws? The throttle body (TB) is a little more complex to remove than that. Are you speaking of the collar between the TB and the intake? If its not cracked no need to remove it..

You can clean your TB with GM upper engine cleaner and a tooth brush or detail brush, open the TB and clean the throat where the plate contacts, the back of the plate and the edges of the plate. Take your time, it is probably gummed up.. I have used a terry cloth rag dipped in the cleaner wrapped around my fingers also...

I was thinking of the 'Throttle Positioning Sensor.
