help !!!electrical problem

when i open the door on my car the radio still works and so do the windows. it is suppose to go off when the connection is broken. This is causing my battery to go dead. I thought it was the battery causing this so i replaced it but still have the same problem. this didn't start until i took my car through the carwash.

There's a door switch that tells the computer that the door is open. On your car I believe that it's inside the door and integrated with the latch. A quick check would be to see if the courtesly lights come on for some doors but not others. You probalbly should clean (or dry) the switch on the door that doesn't turn off the radio and turn on the courtesy lights.. I don't know if you have to remove the door latch to get at it, or if you can just pull back the door panel.

This is part of the retained power circuit. Besides the door turning off the retained power, after 10 minutes the power will go off... Obviously that is not happening either if your battery is dying, so I would scratch the door switch off your list of causes. See this:

Retained Accessory Power (RAP) System Check

Close all of the passenger compartment doors.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

Wait 5 seconds.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

The following components are operational for approximately 10 minutes:

The radio

The rear compartment lid release

The fuel door release

The power windows

The cellular phone (if equipped)

The sunroof (if equipped)

Retained Accessory Power (RAP) Circuit Description

Enabling

When the ignition switch is cycled to the RUN position, the body control module (PZM) energizes the controlled power relay and the accessory time delay relay. The PZM energizes the controlled power relay by grounding terminal B7 on CKT 755 (BLK). This condition applies battery voltage from the LH MaxiFuse® block BODY 3 fuse to the following rear compartment fuse block fuses:

RADIO/PHONE

CLUSTER

AMP (DeVille Only)

The PZM energizes the accessory time delay relay by grounding terminal A1 on CKT 707 (BLK). This condition applies battery voltage from the LH MaxiFuse® block WINDOWS circuit breaker to the power window CKT 70 (PNK).

Disabling

When the ignition switch is cycled to the OFF position, the body control module (PZM) continues energizing the controlled power relay and the accessory time delay relay. The PZM starts a 10 minute timer. After 10 minutes, the PZM removes ground from CKT 707 (BLK) and CKT 755 (BLK), de-energizing the controlled power relay and the accessory time delay relay. This action cuts off battery voltage to the accessory circuits.

The PZM monitors the position of the doors. If a door is opened, the corresponding door jamb switch closes. This action grounds the PZM door jamb input terminal. The PZM removes ground from CKT 707 (BLK) and CKT 755 (BLK), de-energizing the controlled power relay and the accessory time delay relay. This action occurs regardless of the elapsed time.

Here is the Retained Power schematic:

When I get a second, I will go into the diagnostics and post RETAINED POWER ON ALL THE TIME....

Oddly enough, there is no diagnostic tree in the manual. They do provide a few tips however.

The PZM (body control module) removes the ground from CKT 707 when 1) a door is opened and 2) the 10 minute timer expires.

I would check the PZM to see if it is in fact removing the ground, by testing continuity between CKT 707 and ground. Terminal A1 on the Accessory Time Delay or C2/D4 of the PZM (body control module). If after 10 minutes/door opening the ground remains constant your PZM is bad (my guess). OR CKT 707 is shorted to ground (not likely IMHO). That test would tell you if your PZM is functioning.

To test the CKT 707, disconnect A1 at the Accessory Time Delay and C2/D4 at the PZM and see if you still show continuity to ground, if you do 707 is shorted to ground..

Thanks for the info. . My repairman can't get me in until Tuesday. I put a new battery Thursday hoping that was the problem, it was 5 years old. No such luck!! Wouldn't start this morning. I put the battery charger on her this morning and have ended up pulling the fuse to the circut for now. Now if i just have enough gas to last until Tuesday. LoL

I am so glad i found this site it is very useful . Thanks again for the info

You don't get the key to the executive dining room or free use of the XLR-V however until you have over 8000 posts!

By the way, if in fact you do need a PZM (body control module) it is not necessary to buy a new one, you can possibly find one here http://www.car-parts.com We recently had a member go there and buy a PZM (body control module) and he solved his problem... Mike

  • 2 weeks later...

good news all!! My car dried out over the week-end.I thought that was the problem,(water under the maxi-fuse?). Everything is working fine on it now. It was the strangest thing, I got off of work Saturday and started it and it was like it woke up, all of the lights on the selector lit up and the horn honked, it was kind of funny and it has been running fine every since. I never got it in to the repairman (scheduling conflict), but maybe I saved 500.00. Guess i'll just wash her by hand and stay away from the car wash!!! Now I just need to get my power antenna fixed, may go with a stationary one, I haven't had a power antenna yet that worked right!!

Maybe you should check the seal on the maxi fuse cover. What is wrong with your antenna? Does the motor run but the antenna does not move? That is a simple cable replacement.

It might pay for you to pull the fuses and check for corrosion. If you find corrosion, clean the fuse/relay contacts along with the plug with electrical contact cleaner. Good Luck, Mike

yes ,my antenna is stuck in the up position. I did see a post on how to fix it, but haven't tried to do it.

Thanks Mike, i will do that

sharon, don't use any abrasive or emory cloth on the prongs or socket contacts. If you see corrosion evidence (white, green) or burnt contacts pay very close attention to where it came from and clean or replace that fuse/relay and clean the contacts. Lately we have had some members experience problems from the underhood Fuse/Relay Center (not surprising given the potential for moisture). You will find Electrical Contact cleaner in your autoparts store, its a spray.

I don't expect that your problem is gone forever, when the conditions are right it could begin again, so you may get lucky to pull the fuses we spoke about and have a close look at the contact/connection and correct the condition.

Thanks for the info Mike. I will get the spray on my next trip to the parts store. Oh I read the post from Fred :re: women over 30 and Cadillacs. I am on my third Cadillac, but only had one husband LOL LOL LOL. Have a great day all. :D:D:D:D:D:rolleyes:

Seems that you husband is holding up better than the Cadillacs. Are you as rough with him as you are with the Caddy's? Maybe that explains it...

Would you happen to know where the pzm body control module is located???? We can't find it anywhere on our 2001 deville

That's easy. Your vehicle doesn't have a PZM.

Why not start a new thread with a description of your problem?

Warren

The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises
