Easiest way to remove ECM

From a 92 Eldorado, I am trying to diagnose my I034 problem. I have found the wires to connector 2 are loose and the electrical tape that was holding them together has gone loose. When I move the wires around it will fix the problem sometimes and other times it doesn't.

Ok so now, when the data loss occurs if I tap the PCM the problem will go away. This happens every time I tap the PCM, if I don't the problem persists but soon as I tap it boom the problem goes away for awhile. So what does this mean, a loose connector or a loose cal pak?

How do you tap the ECM? Through the top after removing the glove box? The only way to get the ECM out is by removing the sound insulation under the dash and whatever behind it. You'll see ECM, BCM and programmer which moves the air mix door.

I removed the dash and the glove box and the PCM is in plain view I can reach my hand back there and flick it with my finger. I can begin to pull it out but there is a bar bolted into the dash that is in the way. I don't know if I should or even can remove the bar.

You may well have found your problem but make sure that its not a loose connection and your tapping isn't causing the loose connection to show itself. See this article:

That's a pretty good article, that is what I am doing is tapping with my fingers on the top of the case. When I do this the problem goes away right when I tap the ECM but then it will come back maybe five minutes later until I tap it again. I think it may be a loose calpak or maybe a loose connector.

Junk science from the ECM rebuilders...they cannot resell with dented ECM/PCM boxes.

A screwdriver handle is perfect for tap testing a ECM/PCM. Early thin metal GM units are much easier then latter heavy metal ones... fingers? You will never find the fault.

Heads up....Delco does not allow any reman computers for core credit.

Sounds like you should have this probem solved pretty quick. Either the goofy wiring or ECM.

Prom...calpaks....connections....rarely fail......it is simply an program chip.

Any W body....that comes in....... that has a thin wall ECM/PCM that is under the hood. It is a bad ECM/PCM. It cannot handle the hot/cold thermal load cycles.

Your ECM is 15 years old. It certainly could be bad..

Most likely a bad solder inside, with the heat in Arizona I don't doubt it. I drove around all day today with a Vice grip and pads squeezing the PCM together and never had the I034 problem. There is a junk yard by my house that has a 93 Deville PCM for $50 will this work for my Eldo?

I believe that you need to replace it with the same part number. But maybe someone else will comment on that.

Check www.rockauto.com for part numbers for the two cars

Part numbers are the same for a 93 Deville and a 92 Eldorado 16132240 #88999176. So I will have to do some more testing but first I still have to figure out how to get the darn thing out.

On the 93- 94 Northstar Eldorado, there is one small screw (8mm Hex),about midway, on the right side of the PCM. You are working very close to the fender here. when the screw is removed, the entire PCM must move to the right about 3/4" to disengage a pin which locates the left side of the PCM. AT this point the PCM will drop down and can be unplugged.

Good luck,

I don't have a Northstar and the pins that hold the PCM are not there at all so my problem is trying to get it through the limited amount of space that there is. I sure as hell can't pull it through the glove box so this weekend I am going to try to pull it through the dash and see if I can.

I will look in my 91 Seville manual later its probably the same, it drops down under the glove box, we have a few members that have driven around with it laying on the floor... I will look and see if I can find the removal instructions

Ok thanks, its not anywhere in the FSM that I can find but I will keep trying.

Removal of the ECM is similar to removal of the heater core (same location). It takes some 5-10 minutes. Just remove the sound insulator on passanger side and glove box. Unscrew the holding bracket and pull the ECM through the bottom of the compartment, do not try to get it through the top of glove box.

Woo Hoo I think I fixed it. I did everything the FSM said and all appeared that the PCM was ok, so I took a shot in the dark and replaced the PCM. I drove the car for about 45 minutes and I034 never occured, also the car seemed to run better and ride smoother. I hope this fixed the problem.

Terrific, I was going to post the removal instructions, I found them in my 91 FSM but it looks like you did OK..... Good Luck and report back what you experience... We have seen a bunch of members with ECM/PCM problems. It looks like Logan nailed this!
