Traction control button does not work on my 98 STS?

Recommended Posts

I have a 98 STS which I bought about a year ago. I finally took her to the drag strip over the past weekend and when I was about to race the traction control button did absolutly nothing! So I had to race with the TC messd up and it was kinda embarassing that I could not spin the tires at startup, lol.

The car got a 15.6 with the TC messed up. Any idea how to fix this? Is there a way I can permanently disable TC?

BTW, what does the 98 STS get in the 1/4 w/o TC on? High 14s?

What are you expecting the T/C button to do? When you disengage the T/C, you also disengage 1st gear. It's pretty hard to spin tires starting out in second gear. Didn't I answer this once before?

I was able to get a 14.94 @ 94 mph in my 98 STS. Started with shifter in second and just walked it off the line. Tires barked on every run on the one two shift. I put it in third right after it shifted to second gear and let the trans shift for itself.

I answered this guy once before as well Ranger. I guess he thought he'd get a different answer second time around. The REALLY weird part is he didn't even change the subject line. Until I searched back 4 pages, I thought we were being censored!

Maybe he didn't believe us.

Its not a problem, when you turn if off as was stated above, you start in second gear. You are probably better off leaving it on..

In addition is was explained quite well in your first thread...

I have to check to see if the TC switch is a two position switch, if it is, I can't see it resetting... Can someone confirm this?

Just tried mine and it defaults to traction on every time the ignition is turned on.

No no no!

I'm saying is the button does absolutly nothing at all. It does not light up when press or say tc disable or enabled on the dash.

Any codes stored?

My '99 has a message on the DIC that alternates between "traction off" and "traction ready" I can only assume that the '98 works the same, but I'm not sure. Here we thought you were trying to get wheelspin by turning off the traction control. We're all just a bunch of dummies I guess! But we all mean well.

You have two fuse / relay boxes; one on the RF side under the hood and one under the rear seat cushion.

Your car has been modified in some way that you will have to determine. Maybe the "Pioneer AVIC-N1 DVD/GPS Navigation System" would be a starting point.
