Price of Gas

Within the last 4 days just running around I have put 77 dollars in gas in my car. Its starting to make me sick ! Satruday morning (my birthday) I went the the station sat down in the car beaucse I had my old dog with me . It was'nt even 3 mins I swear and when I got back out it was $47.00 to fill it up. Tonight after a long meeting the fuel light came on . Off to the gas station ! I got 3/4's of a tank of gas for $30.00 ! I really think I need to go back to a deville . My old 96 got considerably better mpg. I'm only avd between 16-79 mixed driving. So I'm really starting to feel that I would be better off going back to a Deville 2002 or newer.

I don' think a newer Deville would get any better mileage, in fact it would probably get worse. The only advantage would be that it is designed to run on regular fuel. You probably be best off with a CTS. I checked autotrader a few days back, and I saw some good deals.

Put a pencil to it before you change rides based solely on the price of gasoline.

For example, assume a gallon of gas is $2.60 and you drive 12,000 miles per year and you average 20 MPG with a gas guzzler Cadillac V-8. Your fuel cost per mile is $0.13. Your fuel cost per year would be $1,560.

Now assume you buy a car that delivers 23 MPG average. Your fuel cost per mile would be $0.113 and you would spend $1,356 per year for gas.

The difference is $204 or less than $4.00 per week. Some folks spend more than that per day on toll roads.

Can you trade cars for $4.00 per week?

The price of gas is whatever it is no matter what vehicle you drive.

I average 20mpg in my 97 Deville. Don't know why you are so far below me, unless you do alot of city driving. Then again, I was getting 13 mpg in my Durango, so I am ecstatic about the Caddy mileage. The price of gas is going up even more, much to everyone's dismay. I have read that a price above $3 per gallon national average is not out of the question, and infact likely, before June 1st, or soon thereafter. Who knows why it is going up this time. They have been coming up with new 'excuses' for the last what...................4 years? I feel you though..............I am fed up not only with the price per gallon............but the portion of that gallon that is US/state government fees and taxes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike,

my '96 SLS returns 25 mpg + on average. This is long distance motoring most of the time, at a steady 80 mph.

You should get better mileage with yours, except you do a lot of city driving. I doubt that any comparable Cadillac (or any car of equal size or power) would do better.

Stefan

Fuel prices here (Germany) at the moment 1.32 EUR per liter = 6.00 USD per gallon and rising...

Maybe you can't afford a Cadillac, or any other vehicle for that matter?

Stefank can straighten you out real darn quick! :D

The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises

I can afford whatever I like, but I'm young yet and Im not a fan of wasting money. My grandma lived until she was 95 and I dont want to outlive my money. Just like with everything the american attitude is how much can barrow ? I'm the one thats looking for that one for 2/3s of the price :)

I live in Sweden and we have about the same fuel price as Stefan in Germany mentioned. 6$ per gallon.

Of course it bothers me with the high prices of gas, but then again think about the overall economy.

My Eldo costs me 38 cents/mile and my STS will cost 52 cents/mile.

These costs includes gas, tires, tax, insurance, all parts subjected to normal wear like brake bads, oil, oil filter etc. On my STS I even calculated with brand new shocks (factory ones witch I haven´t purchased yet, timeserting due to burned exhaust valves and brand new factory mufflers).

To get these figures I figure I´ll drive about 25000 miles/year.

Compare this to a used Saab Aero , 3 years old, it costs 1.46$/mile....

That particular owner gets at best 39 mpg but whats the point? ;)

Of course I do all the work on my car myself, and he lets the stealership do the work for him.

But you can drive these big "gasgusslers" for about 1/3 the price of something smaller with the same performance. (only looking at 0-60 times etc, there is NO WAY a Saab can be compared to a Caddy

Just my 2 cents

Michael, you must do a LOT of driving! I fill my Cadillac up once every 3 weeks. Avg. 20-22 mpg city.

I'm once a week, but I use my car for work and am driving around the city alot. I may average 15-16mpg if I'm lucky and I don't think that I drive my car that hard. I guess I should maybe look at new plugs and wires and EGR, but that can wait till summer I guess.

As for the price of gas, JimD said it best, that it is what it is and there is nothing we can do about it other than find an alternative fuel.

Try filling up a caddy, Chevy Z71 and a power boat just to go to the cabin. I've spent $300 just to pull out of the driveway. lol

Depending on how many gallons it took to fill it up, that sounds about right.

If you went 260 miles on 15 gallons, that's 17.3 mpg.

If you went 260 miles on 16 gallons, that's 16.3 mpg.

If you went 260 miles on 17 gallons, that's 15.3 mpg.

How many gallons did it take you to fill it up, after driving 260 miles? Either way, it sounds like you're doing a lot of in-town driving. Even so, those numbers aren't all that high. Do you do a lot of WOT? Do you drive the speed limit? Do you allow a lot of distance between you and the car ahead of you? This isn't about preaching about good/bad driving habits, but that stuff does make a difference.

How old are your O2 sensors? Plugs/wires? Catalytic converter?

My employer pays me $0.445 per mile for sales calls. I make sure I have enough to get a $70 check each week. That takes care of 1 and 1/2 tanks for my Eldo.

Absolutely. The TCC really has two main functions:

1) Improve fuel economy.

2) Reduce heat in the transmission.

If it's not engaging properly, you lose both functions above, especially at highway speeds, and especially #1 above.
