a/c question - code ACM1347 after recharge

Hello all,

I had my a/c system charged on friday due to a low refrigerant message. It turned out that only 0,3 kgs were left in the system. After the recharge the system worked fine.

On saturday I had to drive a longer distance. I had the a/c on and all of a sudden it switched the compressor off. Checking the codes I got ACM1347. Clearing the code will get the system back to work, with proper cooling. It will work fine for quite a while until it sets code ACM1347 again.

I then borrowed an UV light and glasses and examined the system, b/c we put dye in upon recharge.

Looking at the compressor I see traces of dye at the compressor's case joint and below the compressor at the engine oil level switch.

My guess would be that the compressor leaks and should be replaced. I talked to my a/c guy today and he suggested to unload the system to check how much is really in there ( he filled it with 0,9 kgs).

What do you think? Should I go ahead and buy a compressor? After nine years and 80,000 mls it may be no bad idea to replace it anyway...

Is there any other reason this code could set ( i.e. overcharge etc)?

I'll call my parts supplier tomorrow for a price quote, and then the dealer to compare.

thanks in advance for any support

Stefan

PS at Frankfurt Airport I saw this "recycled" Lincoln today; strange what people do to cars sometimes!

At least it was no Cadillac!

Darn,

I just checked one of Germany's biggest US-parts dealers - the compressor retails for 900 EUR that's a whopping 1,080 USD, and that is some aftermarket brand (not specified)!

If my supplier is equally expensive I'll order it from some place in the US, saw some on ebay.

Stefan, let me know if I can help you with that. Try www.gmotors.com, the compressor is about $345 US. Let me know, Mike

If the compressor is leaking around the case, it should be replaced. If the leaksge is only around the clutch, it can be fixed with a new double lip shaft seal. From your description, it sounds like the case seal is leaking and it is best to replace the compressor with a new AC Delco unit. Any AC Delco compresor manufactured after January, 2001 has redesigned case seals.

Mike,

thanks a lot for your offer! I'll check tomorrow with my usual supplier and let you know.

Thanks again,

Stefan

No problem, we can do this through paypal, and I can ship it to you if there is any benefit to that. Mike

After some phone calls there are the following options locally:

1) GM dealer , OEM compressor 920 EUR (1,100 USD) 3-4 days delivery time

2) My usual parts supplier, "Four seasons" compressor 560 EUR (670 USD) , in stock, could pick it up today

Should I go for the "Four Seasons" unit? Are these remanufactured?

Best

Four Seasons (or Four Siezens as I call them) does not have a good reputation. They are rebuilt units and many times, the clutch air gap is improperly adjusted and has to be reset. You also want to be sure the case seals aren't leaking. I've had friends install that brand to replace a compressor with leaking case seals and the Four Siezens compressor was leaking from the case right out of the box...
