Coolant Temp Up and Down Like A Yo-Yo

MAC

Recommended Posts

This morning my coolant temp was going nuts. It was fluctuating from 185-203. I’ve never experience the temp decreasing from 203 to 185, especially since the thermostadt is 196. Driving home, I noticed the temp increased from 194-223 when idling in traffic. I smelled the coolant and no sign of exhaust smell and the expansion tank is at a safe level. I’m thinking the thermostat is about to quit? The temp was up and down like a Yo-Yo--It was pretty freaky.

On a related note, My '92 eldo's temp has been all over the map today. The 4.9 in this car seems to usually run around 203-207, today it hit hte highest i've seen it at almost 230, got on the highway and some air moving through the radiator and it dropped down to only a bit above normal (and no codes). I can also pull the temp down significantly by blasting the heat, but the moment i turn the heat off and start to meet any traffic (slow down), the temp starts rising again. Any suggestions other than thermostat, pump or fan connector? Hopefully I can get this straightened out relatively easily.

Is your AC on or off? Your temps don't sound bad, if you AC is OFF as the fans come on at 228. When you AC is on your fans are on all the time and the extremes are lessened. With the AC off in traffic you will see the temp increase till the fans come on, then the temp will drop...

AC is off, and the radiator is clear and clean. The only reason that I was concerned is that it hasn't fluctuated like this at all before, and always remained pretty steady...just curious I guess as to if I should be worried or not.

Thanks guys

If you're referring to my situation, I was not using the A/C.

Lately, my temp is operating in the normal range though it often goes below the 196 thermostat. When idling in traffic and the temp increases to about 225, once moving again, I sometimes shift to neutral and rev the rpms causing the water pump to circulate more water than usual. This causes the temp to drop more rapidly than simply letting it cool by air going through the radiator alone. I don't know if this is a sign that my water pump is not working efficiently at lower rpms? It is a big difference to see the temp drop like a rock after revving in neutral.

Both you guys have your AC off, that causes the fans only to come on when the coolant reaches +228 degrees, then the temps start down. If the AC is on, the fans run constantly and you don't see a large fluctuation in temp ranges... That said, if you still feel uncomfortable, it wouldnt hurt to change the stat, maybe its binding, when was it changed last? Check the waterpump belt and tensioner on the NS, typically however the NS belt will cause problems at high speed not bumper to bumper issues..
