CadiKing
Well I've driven about 1000 miles so far. The car seems fine, but... IT AIN'T NO STS! I am continuing to look for another one. Top motor mounts are somewhat loose on the '97 Deville. How many dog bone mounts are there? I see two one the top, and when i touch them, the rubber is able to spin in the mount. I fugure it is time to replace. Scotty, or someone, had posted some information about polyeurothane mounts, if I'm not mistaken. Can you send me in the right direction? thanks jim
BodybyFisher
You can get them at rockauto.com they are pretty cheap. Your's sounds looser than mine.. You have two on the 97? I was talking about poly suspension parts. I need to replace my torque struts also. I am interested in your impressions, as you know I have a 96 Deville, while its nice, its floaty and boaty.. What is the difference between the Deville and STS? What is the difference between the Deville and STS? Mike, thanks for the reply. the 97 devile is boaty and floaty! It is weird how much that Deville feels like my '94 Town Car! I am serious. My son feels it too. I cannot wait to find another sts. the sts is always in control. no roll, no dip, no sway, my son has the job of locating a suitable replacement. found a mid-to-late 90's STS. freind at college's grandpa is sellin' i may be buyin'! anyway, get this... 3pm my wife calls, 97 deville said it was overheating and she pulled off the highway... i had AAA tow it home... the belt is shredded... i removed the idler. it spins fine. it has no play in the bearing, the tensioner appears to work alright too... i will lube it up, should i put it back into service. other than the belt being shredded, i cannot find anything wrong. i started the car and the pulley on the end of the cam seems fine too. I need to know if the belt just happen to go south on it's own accord, or if something took it out. the water pump pulley has no play, it spins fine. no wear detected.. no tightness, doesn't feel like it has any hiccups... (manual for '99 looks like a lot of work for water pump replacement...) how do i know if it is tensioner, or pump or both..safer to replace all what all should i buy? water pump, thermostat, belt, GASKETS??? i thought you guys were talking about a new design on this, or was it the thermostat? if i can replace only the belt and it will hold until i get all new parts, that's okay too. please let me know what you think, i'm still trying to salvage new york snowboarding weekend fri - sun, thanks
Ranger
CadiKing, My '97 Deville had 107K when I sold it with the original belt and pump. I don't think they go south on their own accord. Something else is in play here.

I cannot find anything else, so i'm off to autozone for a belt, in stock, to try tonight and see if the water pump locks up when driven by the belt... it feels fine right now, no play, no roughness at all... i am trying to get lucky here, or at least solve it further for the price of a belt...7.99 yes, i will replace it with a delco belt if it works.. thanks i' ll let you know how i make out... thanks
Ranger
How about the tensioner. Is there enough spring tension to prevent slippage? Put a few drops of oil at the fulcrum and work it back and forth.
BodybyFisher
Thanks for the feedback on Deville vs. STS. That was my impression also going from a 91 Seville to my 96 Deville. I can't wait to buy and STS. I can't help you with the belt, but it sure seems like something happened to cause it. Gently roll the tensioner wheel and see if you feel any roughness. I find it hard to believe that the pump froze up without leaking. Maybe the belt just gave up the ghost.. CadiKing
$7.99 Fix????? Well I ran to Autozone, bought their cheapest belt because I figured I would end up shredding it anyway. Tensioner felt real good, it was 25 degrees and ten at night. I put the belt on, added fluid, started the car and drove it til it hit normal (?) 212 degrees F. The temp has been staying between 206 & 215 since I bought the car. I hope that is normal because that's how it ran this morning on the way to work, 25 degrees outside, 18 miles @ 58 mph, two stop signs and four or five WOT's! So maybe the belt did shred due to age. I left the cover off the water pump belt so I could keep an eye on it today. It looks fine. Cannot wait to see what STS my son has tracked down. Man I could own a driveway full of these Cadillacs! Easiest Water pump belt change I have ever done. It is funny how the belt looked okay a few weeks ago and then just comes apart laterally. Thank you for all your wisdom. Time will tell if it was just the belt. I'll wait 'til spring to change out the themostat, water pump, and belt again. I'll have a helping of WOT's at lunch...just to be sure it is fixed. stsjoe
Probably just a bad belt then, I had mine split long ways, so sometimes they do just let go
CadiKing
Probably just a bad belt then, I had mine split long ways, so sometimes they do just let go Still has me concerned, but WOT's at lunch and no problem with overheat, etc. I will get it hot on the way home tonight, then I will put the belt guard back on and forget about it 'til spring or next time it gets hot, which ever comes first! LOL thanks,
BodybyFisher
I have my old tensioner if you need it, its in pretty good shape, Mike Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
CadiKing
I have my old tensioner if you need it, its in pretty good shape, Mike Thanks Mike! I'll let you know! I could not find the slightest movement in either the water pump bearing, nor the tesioner bearing. I will replace the whole assembly, from the water pump to the thermostat, in the spring. Autozone has the tensioner for $60, not that I would buy an Autozone tensioner, and then expect reliability. No thanks. A lifetime warrenty is USELESS on the side of the raod on the east side of Cleveland. Drove it home last night and then about 100 miles up to Clevland and back. Sixty to eighty-five mph. No problems. What can I say, other than, Its' a Cadillac! I told my wife... I'll keep an eye on it! (yah, from New York this weekend snowboarding at Holiday Valley. Trip saved by a super-easy fix on a Cadillac water pump belt!) LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL Thanks for all your help and insight.
