joeb
since it is -10 today and my non-caddy shifts slow when its cold, i was wondering about tranny fluid flow when the vehicle is very cold. on a 96 or so caddy, does the tranny pump cold fluid thru the radiator to try and warm it up when it is cold? of course the radiator is cold too at start up. i was wondering what type of thermostatic valve control there is, if any, on a vehicle? even on a fully warmed up car, does the trans fluid still stay fairly cool on real cold days? BodybyFisher
Make sure your fluid level is up were it belongs. Mine does this also, I discussed this with the guru and he said that the cold in conjunction with low fluid will cause this as the fluid is thicker... Ranger
The "cooler" is actually a heat exchanger. I think it is a coiled line that is inside of the side tank, so as the coolant heats up (fairly quickly) it transfers heat to the the trans fluid via the coild line in the side tank to heat the trans fluid. Conversely, when the trans fluid gets too hot, it will transfer heat TO the coolant.
joeb
i have a trans oil temp gauge on my gtp. it never seems to move over 100 in the winter. makes me wonder if the trans even warms up in the winter. its aftermarket though. i have not tracked down where it gets its reading from? trans case? cooler line? until the thermostat on the engine opens, there is no flow into the radiator so i bet it takes a long time for the radiator to warm up in the winter.
