PORT AND POLISH HEADS

99 STS MAN

Recommended Posts

Lets start with something simple...

Press the Caps Lock key and turn off the uppercase...

It is 1) annoying, 2) hard to read and 3) should only be used if you are yelling or trying highlight a word or two...

i.e. PLEASE!

Don't waste your time. Fix the head and put it back on.

The engine design is pretty much optimized unless you are really serious about getting more air through the engine.

Check the board for a recent turbo addition hwich was absoulutely magical. This is about the only way (other than nitrous) that you'll squeeze more power out of the engine and make it worth the effort.

THANKS!!

That's too funny!

If I remember correctly, the Guru said ports should be left alone since the Northstar is pretty much maxed out as far as design and HP output. I think he also said that porting could actually be a detriment to the Northstar since it could or would alter the air/fuel ratio and the computer may not compensate correctly. Regarding exhaust porting, I believe he said that exhaust dynamics could be upset.

who's paying for the head gasket if you don't mind saying? are you doing both heads or just one? I suppose everyone assumes that if 1 gasket is bad, you might as well do both heads if you have to pull the motor anyway.

we are getting away from the original question of whether porting the heads is worth it. this thread has morphed into a "what exactly is the mechanic going to do?".

1. pull heads while motor is in car? good trick.

2. drop subframe? lots of work.

3. timesert block?

besides, caddy mechanics don't take shortcuts.

The porting was answered by jhall immediately! NO DON'T DO IT THERE ARE NO GAINS! What the H are you talking about and who are you to put up a STOP SIGN in a discussion?

1) MANY here have done the head gasket job with the ENGINE IN THE CAR

2) MANY Cadillac dealers have done the HEAD GASKETS without TIMESERTING the BLOCK and just because they are CADILLAC mechanics DOES NOT mean the job will be done right meaning that it will be timeserted (required)! GET THAT IN YOUR HEAD.

3) WHAT made me ask if the block was to be TIMESERTED was the CHEAP price, $1,200! I have NEVER seen job done for less than $2200, the TIMESERT KIT alone is $400 or so. If the engine is NOT timeserted he is in for trouble.. My question was to save this guy another headgasket problem within 12 months.. I DO want to know what the mechanic is going to do for $1,200!

Questions are asked for a REASON and discussions WILL branch out (its brainstorming), PLEASE don't come here and act like a TRAFFIC COP!

ANYWAY, didn't YOU go off topic with this statement? "who's paying for the head gasket if you don't mind saying" What does that have to do with PORTING and how does that contribute in a positive way?

Porting the heads will be a waste of time unless you plan on doing away with the crossover pipe from the front bank. That pipe is the single biggest choke point of this motor. My time actually got worse after having the exhaust sides ported until I could get rid of the "choke" pipe. A free flowing exhaust will help, but that is about all you can do unless you want to turbo it.

(A. why? B. Buy a Vette?). look into turbo or supercharging (again why?).

The reason is to be unique. I had the fast sports car with lots of power, but so did/does everyone else. To have that same power in a luxury car "supposedly" can't be done. Who says you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Well, I did it!!

Yes ,The engine will be removed,And it will be timeserted. The job takes about,10 hours. He is not taking any shortcuts.I know that $1200 sounds cheap but he is doing the work on the side.So you may be right about $2200.Cadillac wants $3300 so take that for what it's worth.I'm just want to save money.Last week the pump in the transmision went out.It cost $600 for a used trans with apox 30,000 miles on it and a 90 day warr.(good deal) He only chargerd me $400 for the swap.It took him only 4 hours.Anyway when you get bad luck it sure hits you all at once.He thinks that the overheating caused it to go bad.So be very carefull. Thanks for the info......I think I am just going to clean the heads up, getting all the carbon off.I may polish the exhaust ports aand combustion chambers little just to keep it for building up carbon as easily...

whoa bobby, thanks for dumping on me. i visit this board often and don't try to direct or control threads. I try to keep my comments to a minimum and ask short, direct questions. sorry if i came across as a jerk.

The guy working on it said if you remove the head bolts you must drill and install timeserts there is no other way.

The CHOKE pipe that Mark is talking about is the front bank exhaust crossover under the oil pan area, this pipe is restrictive.
