NeckMeats
Over the weekend I replaced the water pump on my 92 eldo. After everything was finished I let the car run for awhile and noticed that the fans never turned on. At this point the engine has near no coolant and is just getting some fresh stuff -- so the temp is over 230F. At what point are the fans supposed to engage? The car runs about 205F when I'm going about 40, but any slower and it may hit up to 228 (which is pretty hot for this car). This morning I *think* I heard the fans turn on at a stop light but I didn't notice a drop in temp. What is the best way to diagnose the fans on this car and are there any aftermarket replacements that may be better suited? Thanks in advance for any help
BodybyFisher
There is a fuse that controls the AC Clutch and cooling fans? Does your AC clutch engage? Check the fuse, I think it says ACCOMP... There are also three, relays. I had hot wired my fans as I had an electrical problem, if you hot wire them you know that its not your fans.. Thanks in advance for any help The fans turn on at 226 (+/- a couple) and then turn off at some 212. Are you sure you got all the air out and the pump works properly? Is your upper radiator hose hard and hot when engine is about 200? The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
NeckMeats
I checked the hoses and, yes, they're moving fluid. I've also filled the reservoir twice so the pump and thermo are working as expected. Now, here's something interesting... the computer that controls the blower motor is jacked up (which I've been told is a common problem for early 90's cadillacs). So, I have to manually plug in the power for it at the firewall whenever I want to use my ac or heater. When I plug it in, the fans work as expected. From what I understand these should be competely different systems - is it coincidence or is the car possessed? I was thinking of running a switch to the dash to handle both the ac and the fans... hopefully, there's a less intrusive method to fix.
BodybyFisher
I would check fuses and relays if the fans can be hot wired on.. There are three relays. Do you have the service manual to diagnose this problem? NeckMeats
I have the manual but I haven't checked anything in there yet. I figured I would ask here first in case it was a common problem. Thanks for the insight
BodybyFisher
I would not call it a common problem. I would follow the tree in the manual with a volt meter you might just have a corroded relay contact or a bad relay. Is your avatar Po? (Tele-Tubby)?
