Master Cylinder?

Recommended Posts

Just started having a brake problem today. Pedal goes all the way to the bottom and is mushy. I could hardly brake. Had DIC give me code of T083 which is low brake fluid. Filled it up with a whole bottle of the DOT 3 and it drank it all away. Possibly a leaking hose? Or is it the master cylinder?

Anyone ever replace the MC before? Difficult?

Thanks

I would inspect all the brake lines for leakage - particularly the rubber lines at the front calipers as they flex and crack with age.

Hey Ken,

I'm with KHE... I'll bet you lost a brake line. Especially being "up North" with the fine rusty underbody cond. my bet is on the steel lines down below somewhere. I noticed mine were getting dangerously thin on my Eldo due to road salt. :o

Park it on someplace where you can easily see leaks (like you neighbor's driveway!) and have someone press the pedal while you trace the lines. I did this a couple month's ago with a friends Saturn, and we found a geyser where the battery acid had eaten away at the lines under the hood!

Regarding replacing the MC, if it happens to be that... It isn't to bad of a job. If you "bench bleed" it first, you will get very little air in the lines. This speeds up the whole process. On a similar note, I just saw yesterday that there is a company I believe called Russell that makes self bleeding valves now. These bleeder valves have little check-balls in them to make life simple for the DIY brake machanic! They were like $10 a pair at www.summitracing.com

Thanks guys. I had an inkling it was a brake line, but it's been raining here so much I couldn't tell if it was leaking or not. I took it to the local garage and they confirmed that my front right line was burst and the left front should be replaced also. The rear left was starting to crack but they said it should be okay for quite a while yet.

I would have like to do it myself, but I just don't have the time right now, so I let them do it. Convenience is pricy at times............$220 for two front hoses with full bleed and labour.
