Code PC0717

Recommended Posts

OK, so here we go.

I have had this code come up ever since I bought my Cadillac 3 years ago.

It comes up as "Service Transmission" I check the codes and its always a History code.

Turn the car off and restart and it goes away.

The funny thing is when this "Service Transmission" message appears my car shifts vicious! And when I mean vicious, I mean it when I WOT throttle it, the Northstar pulls like never before, its spins all the way through 2nd and slams into third squaking the tires. I had the Transmission fluid flushed 2 years ago and this message only appeared a total of 4 times over the course of two summers.

My question is: why would it be so much more aggressive? (seems like theres another 50HP added)

Could it be something as simple as a sensor?

The previous owener said he had this code for 2 years + my 3 years with the car. Still runs smooth, on any other day the transmission shifts smooth.

Any info would be great, because I have to video tape this thing. Its unbelievable how it shifts. Its not like any other 4.6 Northstar, I swear it would shave 1 1/2 seconds off a 1/4 time.

Crazy stuff. B)

It is a simple $29.00 sensor that is $1000 in labor inside the trans.

When that code sets the trans goes to high line pressure to avoid slipping.

I finally got sick of the hard shifting and service transmission message and paid

the dealer to fix it.

If you want to fix it yourself check out this link. 0717

  • 1 year later...

Well the "Service Transmission" display message is back and occurs almost everytime I drive. I was thinking that maybe I should check my fluids and have the tranny flushed, who knows what kind of condition the fluids are after 4 years.

Also when I was driving home earlier, I was doing about 110-120kmh and I shifted down to third, then back into Overdrive and I noticed the RPMS were decreasing at all, it seems like I'm missing my 4 gear?

Any suggestions???

I just read this thread, as you see from my thread I am getting it also (we both have 96's I see). I am glad to see that you have been able to drive it so aggressively (your first post).

Yes I will shift harder. The PCM calculates input (shaft) speed from the vehicle speed and commanded gear, when this code is present.

and, the PCM commands default line pressure.

Personally, I like the harder shifts. I recently had a discussion with Mark (turbo Mark), and he said that he was able to increase the line pressure somehow. I am not sure if the harder shifts cause premature wear but it is something that I am curious about.

Did you see this link to the P0717 job?

Yes I did read that How-To.

I previously had no problem with the message occuring only a few times over the summer, but sometimes it is displayed 3 times in a row. Also before, I had that overdrive gear, now it seems it is missing. At 120kmh my RPMS were almost 4000!!

Don't flush it! Just drain and refill.

Thank you for that tip! I had forgotten how many times I've seen that on this forum. Does anybody ever flush it??

Just a new note:

My PC0717 code pops up and when I check my codes it is in the history, but from a dead stop and accelerate it does shift abruptly into second then into third, but on the highway it definetly seems like my OverDrive gear is missing.....also when I manually downshift into third, the car downshifts and then when I shift down into 2nd it doesnt actually downshift, but it will into 1st gear. But when I manually put it into 2nd gear it does drive in that gear.

I am really confused with this???

I'm hoping its just that connector or sensor.

OD should be missing when the CEL is on when the code is in history. OD should return when the CEL is out. That is how mine is working. The P0717 code disables TCC or OD... There are a whole host of controls that are disabled with the P0717 code.

My OD is definetly missing at all times!

If you are sure that you do not have OD with the CEL out and with NO P0717 in history or current that is not good. Try disconnecting the battery to clear all codes then see if you have OD.

Does the P0717 come all 100% of the time with you? If it is in history (with CEL) light on you wont have OD
